    My Rant

I keep seeing the same thread posted on multiple forums. It goes something like this: My (wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, etc) wants a (gun model A,) but I think (gun model B) is a better choice.

Sorry guys, this one sets my hair on fire. When you first started with guns, who made your choices for you? What's that boys, you chose for yourself? You made that choice in your PRETTY LITTLE HEAD? Women know what they want. if they make a bad choice, SO WHAT? A Hi-Point beats hell out of a handbag or key ring. Be supportive. Talk to her. Maybe she actually has good and valid reasons for her choice, like it fits her hand well. You know, the kind of reasons YOU use.

We all want to protect gun rights. Every woman involved in the shooting sports helps the cause. Support women's choices. You trust them, in many cases, to rear your children, run your household, manage your budget, AND PRODUCE INCOME. She can choose her own damn gun.

Amen to this. If she thinks that a particular gun will suit her purposes she should buy it. Just like all others, if she figures out later that it doesn't work for her or that another would serve better...buy that and sell the first. (personally I've never been good at the last part )

Man or woman, it boils down to what they can accurately shoot. But did you hit the bulls-eye with your first choice? What I am saying is, don't be so bull-headed that you don't consider the counsel of someone who has more experience than you. A 90 year old man who wants a 1911 .45 but can't rack the slide has made a bad choice, especially if someone could have helped him make a better decision. Something I have observed. It all boils down to what tool you can implement to protect yourself. Man or woman, do you help them make a decision that works for them? Or do you let the salesman say "I have just what you need" and sell them what he has on the shelf?
Whatever adjective or verb comes to mind, I am...NotSo.

One of my goals in life is to shoot more people on purpose than I do by accident. So far, so good.

If it is the first gun, then the question has to be asked, have you shot a gun before, and like it enough to want one, or do you want to get something for protection, and have never shot a gun before in your life. If it is that 2nd one, then i would strongly try to redirect a person who wanted a subcompact in 45 or 40 cal, because they have never experienced recoil, and you want them to like shooting. you dont start a person off on a 12 gauge or a 500 S&W.

Instead you say, table that for a minute, lets go to a range that has rentals and you can shoot several guns and make a more informed decision
And when you get to said range, you start them on a 22

after all, you want them to become a enthusiast, not another person who doesn't like them. What burns me up are all those youtube videos where people hand women guns that they know are going to recoil hard enough to hit them in the head or knock them down, because they think it is funny. All you did is drive away a potential gun owner and prove what kind of person you are.

When my wife decided, about 3 years ago, that it was time for her to have her own SD pistol, I begged and borrowed every handgun I could find. She shot them all. Ended up buying a Hi Point C 9 and learned to shoot it well. 100 rounds every Saturday for months. Then she decided she really liked my SCCY better. After a series of medical problems and procedures, she now has a .22 Walther in her night stand and a PT 22 on her person. Me??? I got a shooting "buddy" for life and [email protected] fine shot to watch my back. Yeah, let them decide.

Agree wholev heartily. When my wife wanted a SW5906 I got her a good deal on it with 3 mags. The more interest she shows in shooting the more I get to shoot.

This topic is way too broad to rant about, if you ask me. What? You didn't ask me? Now THERE'S a topic worth ranting about!

But this is a forum; if you don't want faceless, groundless soapboxing post your rant in your gun safe.

Some folks will try to sway a female loved one out of sheet condescension. Some will try it to compensate for the fact that they can't spell condescension. Some will do it because of recoil or ergonomic issues already discussed. Some female loved ones will have excellent judgment even in an area they are new to, and some won't. Gun folks love to give advice. Cest la vie.
