    New Mold in Town

As an annual gift to myself around tax time I purchase myself a new mold of better quality to replace some of my older Lee molds that I have had for many years. The new mold is a Arsenal 4 cavity 170 gr. .311" Ranch Dog clone that I had cut 50/50 two with gas checks and two plain base bullets for plinker loads since I don't use a gas checks for those anyways. I really like the nice large meplat as it will make a great hunting bullet, can't wait till next weekend to cast up a bunch.

I use the Lyman 311041, yours looks even better and the Lyman has done yeoman service for many years. Great design; with or without...

I have a couple old Lyman/Ideal molds but they are for pistol I picked up at a estate sale for $25 each, one came with the handles so I just change that out as needed. Lyman always seem to cast on the small side for me at least with the molds I have, but they work well powder coated. The mold above only cost me $87 shipped to my door. It's my first Arsenal but I've heard good things about them so I decided to give them a try.

Cast up a little over 300 bullets yesterday, around 150 each of the plain base and gas check version of the bullet. They drop .312" from the mold and will be sized to .311" I plan on powder coating the plain base bullets for my plinking and small game loads and gas checking and using traditional lube or PC for my full house loads in the 30-30.

Got the plain base bullets powder coated up today. If it doesn't settle in an rain next Saturday I'll get to shoot some Red Dot loads.

It's been awhile since I updated this treat but after some testing the mold is a bust in my old Sav. 170 30-30 as the ogive is too large to chamber without it sticking. No real loss as the Lee 170 gr. FP works and shoots just fine in the old Sav. pump gun.

However, I have always wanted a good bullet for my Sav. 99 in 300 Sav. and it has a generous chamber and throat to boot and the bullet fits just perfectly.

I'm not pushing these to hard yet just a basic plinking load at the moment using 16.0 grs. of Alliant 2400 for a MV of around 1500 fps. I loaded both gas check and plain base version of this bullet for the test at 50 yds.
