Well lookie thar. Maybe the cleaning fixed it. Or you may still be correct about the OOB theory.

We look forward to the next range report!

It all looked reasonable and I did check the slide was fully home... We'll see Friday. I'm going to try it with ammo loaded then and will report back - probably in the evening.

Ok. Case closed!!!!! It needed a good cleaning. Shot 50 rounds with zero problems.

Certainly glad that this issue was resolved without a trip back to Miami! I'm curious as to why the OP nor any of the replies mentioned pulling the trigger again in the case of a failure to fire? Both of the Slim series pistols, the 709 & 740 have second strike capability! At the very least, I would have pulled the trigger another time or two before ejecting the cartridge (after waiting at least 30 seconds). In the case of a gummed up firing pin channel, the subsequent strikes may have allowed the firing pin to make it to the primer and discharge the round. The downside of that would have been not fully diagnosing the apparent problem i.e. a gummed up firing pin channel.
