Nice looking '738. I have a 2010 build ("B" in the serial number) as well as a 2016 build (with a "D" in the serial number) and those both needed the little tab filed down to eliminate failing to feed from the magazine. What I'm talking about is in this video ( ). Once I did that, no problems with either.

To specifically answer your question, I have not used any ammo except FMJ at the range.

That seems a bit high to me. I bought my first TCP (new) from Cabelas about a year and a half ago for the same price you paid. I buy everything now off the Internet, but I take my chances. You bought locally and now have a relationship with a gunsmith, so that's certainly worth something. People seem to either love 'em or hate 'em. I like mine and I hope you'll like yours too. Good luck!

Additionally when it comes off an internet seller many times there will be shipping, credit card charges and the FFL to pay. Having a gunsmith there at the shop is worth something.

All the ammo I've ever fired from my TCP, were reloads using XTP bullets. I've got one of the "A" models.

A quick scan of the Internet didn't yield any information, but it would be interesting to get a true account of what "changed" between the different letter models. Could it be that they just ran out of numbers and bumped the letter? They did, however change the numbering scheme, as my "B" model ends with "B" and my "D" model begins with "1D". It is interesting they didn't use the more common Taurus serial numbering scheme (KAA00000) but I'm guessing the USA factory isn't allowed to use Brazil serial numbers.

    DEPENDS!!
    on so many things, actually.
no 2 guns even back to back serial numbers can be assured of running relibally on a certain ammo, the XTP has a pretty good reputation in the 380 caliber, Personally I use XTP, Golden Sabre, COP /Barnes all copper, Gold dot in my 380.
you need to pick a color and try them in the weapon as to self defense ammo.
the other issue is quality control at taurus, again no 2 weapon sare likely to be the same. in my case when I bought my TCP 738 I went through 3 at the gun shop before I found one that met my expectations of operation and function, I bought number 4 that the clerk showed me.
shortly after buying it and at about 250 or so rounds it still was not running correctly and sent it back to taurus for repair, still not 100% so it sits in the top of my gun safe.
hope you have better luck with yours.
the main ammo that I have heard of problems with was the Hornady FTX and it seems that many 738 have a problem ejecting a full loaded bullet form the ejection port , due to the small size of the ejection port.
this of course is important IF you have a malfunction and need to clear the chamber to reload the weapon.
hope this has helped you a bit, and enjoy the weapon.
