...and make it with an unfluted cylinder, and 11 degree target crown.... well, I said I was still dreaming........
Thanks to the Mods for the transfer/merge!
Hopefully this idea will gain some momentum. Taurus guns have a rabid and loyal fan base, and I believe such a gun would be an amazing success and put the handgun world on notice. Picture for a moment the cover of "Guns and Ammo" or NRA's "Rifleman" sporting a 10 inch model of the Gov't Bull laying across the carcass of a dead wild hog or grizzly bear.
As mentioned earlier, Mr. Kresser, CEO of Taurus liked the idea, but that is where it lies for now. I agree with TheOldRedneck that the Judge frame, specifically a Raging Judge frame would EASILY do this cartridge justice! Like the BFR I believe a 10 " barrel would maximize such a gun! Such a gun may also be able to shoot the .410, but i believe a dedicated 45/70 would be advised as someone who owns a Judge may just attempt a Colt round or such....
Just having more fun dreaming and thinking out loudly.
I encourage folks to write to Taurus and help elicit excitement about getting this consumately classic, yet popular and modern, round chambered in a fine Taurus revolver!
All things are possible with God, but with their state of the art facility and "machines to make the machines"...all things are almost possible with Taurus...but the Raging Judge, aka "Gov't Bull" in 45-70 Gov't in a Taurus revolver is most DEFINITELY possible!
MilProGuy, I'm drooling over this idea as well to the point the wife is wearing a life jacket to bed!

Dream big, what about 11 degree Tailor throating of the forcing cone. Cylinder long enough for a 500 grain cast load. A twist rate that can handle the long cast bullets. Interchangeable front sight blades for different loads. Different grip options for different size hands and taste. Sling stud options. Gun in blue or stainless. Your turn.
Integral Weaver style rail on the top strap! Also think if they base it on a Judge/Raging frame with 3 inch cylinder, the OAL will suffice for the 500 grain cast load.
From the Real Guns site: "The extremes where the Oregon Trail Laser Cast 300 grain, far left, with a COL of 2.500" and the Cast Performance WLN 405 grain second from right at 2.560"; a total spread of .060". "
Real Guns - 45-70 Gov't - Cast Bullet Handloads
With a 3" cylinder, reloader's dreams would become reality with this wonderful, low-pressure cartridge, and cast bullets!!
...or at least drilled and tapped.....![]()
With the Raging series barrel the Taurus mount works. It uses bars through the rib slots and is rock solid. Any Weaver type rings work. They do not shoot loose like some mounts. My Raging Bull .454 with a 6" barrel has had an abundance of heavy loads through it. That is why when I bought a Judge I started wishing they would do the 45/70 on a Raging style frame with the double cylinder lock. That gives the double action cylinder the stability of the single action. Rugers Redhawks lockup has allowed it to eat things a revolver like the 29 Smith gives up the ghost on. Taurus has the frame and engineering. It is tempting to buy a Raging Judge and just build one.
Your one of those evil deer hunter type. You probably not only kill bambi but eat him too. Ain't it gooooood eating. With big cast bullets you usually don't have as much blood shot meat, eat right up to the bullet hole.
Today, I held in my hands a Raging Judge and thought to myself: "This is the near-perfect platform for the Gov't Bull. All it needed was a 10 inch barrell for optimal powder burn." I marvelled at the gun I was holding for a few moments. After that thought, I drooled a little (albeit not on the gun, more of a mental drooling), then handed it back over the counter...dreaming.
Then I thought, "Taurus could do this, and make it happen rather easily!"
