    Taurus Model 72 pump carbine

Since I cant figger out how to start my own thread I thought id ask my first question here. If thats ok. I recently bought a taurus model 72 22mag. pump carbine. It was brand new (ten years old) never fired. I dont know why but the 22mag shells will not load into the chamber. I tried different shells and always get the same result, partly in but no more. I took it down and tried to slip a 22lr into the chamber and it seems to fit perfectly. Is it possible that the wrong barrel was assembled with this rifle? I tried to contact taurus but cant get into their site.

I would think I would try giving the chamber a really good brushing. It may be possible someone has fired some .22 long rifle in the gun and leaded up the chamber in front of a .22 LR depth and that is keeping a .22 mag from chambering. It is also possible the previous owner may have fired .22 WRF ammo which is slightly shorter than the WMR ammo and still creating a dirty and shorter chamber. Regular .22 LR ammo can be chambered and shot in a .22 WMR and it will screw things up. A .22 WMR cannot be chambered into a .22 LR. Get some good solvent and brush the hades and hopefully the lead out of the chamber. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you need to ship back to Taurus

Re: Taurus Model 72 pump carbine

Thanks for the reply Jake. The thing is, the gun has never been fired. I bought it in the box from a guy who never shot it but was the one who ordered it from Tarurs. Like i said it was made in 2000 but it was still in the box. Maybe I will keep trying but I was unable to get onto the Taurus site and that is how i wound up here. Thanks again

It does sound as though you have a 22LR chamber in your rifle. Before you shoot it, call Taurus Customer Service number at 1-800-327-3776 and discuss it with them.

I wonder how this turned out ?? Perhaps the rifle was chambered in .17 HMR ? If it was chambered in regular .22 LR I don't think the .22 magnum would go very far into the chamber at all.

Re: Taurus Model 72 pump carbine

There is a .17 HMR version. It's called them model 172. There was a carbine and a rifle model.

Is it possible that this is a 62 instead or a 172?

What we need if it can be done is pics to go with this. If not that's okay too.

The markings might tell you or us if is indeed a 72. I know that sounds odd, but there's never been a case of a 62 barrel being put one a 72.

One other thing comes to mind. If the gun is unfired and the action has not be cycled for that long things might bind or rust.

The other possibility is that the gun you bought is defective.

62's were built in both .22 WRM and in .22lrf..

It seems that the 62's .22 magnum designation to 72 happened in 2001. Since there are both versions in the 62 to the 72 nomeclature it is possible that a few or some 72s were made in .22lrf. It has happened before with other brands in the distant past.
Will the .22lrf ammo work through the action? Don't fire it obviously.

The original poster PMed me some time back that the barrel was mis labeled. It was a .22 Long Rifle. I do not remember what his disposition was regarding the carbine.

Re: Taurus Model 72 pump carbine

I just bought SAME gun this summer (new in the box) and it was so stiff I could barely make it pump, load, fire and eject. After several boxes of ammo and several good cleaning (esp the chamber mentioned by Jake3501 it works smooth and fast as any pump gun I got. This thing was actually NOT broke in. 21" barrel, SS, 22mag. I removed the rear sight and made a block to fit in the slot and drilled and taped the block and mounted a Millet Red Dot Scope. It is just a super fine, light weight, medium range gun. I'd prefer blue or black but the SS is pretty.......
