    What do I have?

I acquired about a year ago an old Taurus revolver that used to belong to my father. It is chambered in 38spec and he bought it circa 1980. If I remember correctly I think that this gun was made before the current owner of Taurus took over so there is little info available. My gun looks similar to the current Taurus model 65 but it has an exposed ejector rod like the S&W model 67. Below is a pic of the S&W 67 that is about the same as my gun except I have wood grips.

It sounds like a model 81 or 82, but open the cylinder and look for the model stamped on the inside of the yoke, could be maybe an 80

The 82 is fixed sight and ejector shroud. Here's a pic of a blued one.

The older M80 looks like a Smith M10, no ejector rod shroud.

I think both guns were/are available in stainless. Sounds to me like an older M80.

    Re: What do I have?

It sounds like this description of a model 83 as it is the only thing in a 38 special with Adjustable rear sights other than a target revolver the model 86. Taurus Model 83

Notes: Another basic sort of police-type revolver, the Model 83 features a 4-inch heavy ribbed barrel, half-length ejector rod shroud, and large wooden grips. The front sight is Patridge-type, and the rear sight is micrometer-adjustable. A medium-frame revolver, it was introduced in 1977 and may still remain in production, though it was taken off the international market in 2001. The original finish was blue, though they could also had in nickel plating, and in 1993 a stainless steel model, the Model 83SS, was introduced.

Thanks Jake, you nailed it on your 2nd post. Your 1st post told me where to look for the model # though

There is a faint stamp 83 on the frame side when you swing the cylinder open.

Here is a pic now that I am at home and can take a pic of the gun.

Although the pic is terrible, it is a model 83 apparently. Is there any thing I need to know about this gun? any bad traits? I've shot 500 rounds or so through it, so it functions well as far as I can tell.

You have a great gun, very similar to the Model 10 Smith, only with adjustable Sights. the main trait is it will just keep on shooting and be hard to ever wear out and I'm sure it will shoot heat seaking bullets. I just bought it's big brother, a S & W Mod 66

Well, with adjustable sights in blue, it'd be a Smith and Wesson M15. In stainless it would be a Smith and Wesson M64. The M66 is Smith's stainless M19, caliber .357 Magnum.

I was talking about My model 66 Smith, which is stainless being the same as the Model 19 Smith which is blue, not his Model 83 Taurus. I was saying my model 66 is his model 83's big brother, although they are actually 2nd cousins twice removed.

    Re: What do I have?

They're all basically K frames, well, sorta....LOL The only Smith I have kept is my M10. My 4" 66 Taurus outshoots it. It's a good old gun, though, from the mid 60s, tight, in great shape.
