It was time. The trigger resetand the low and rearward ejection issues I was having were not working themselves out. So on Friday 4/27 I called Taurus. I quickly reached a nice woman in customer service who asked a few questions the problems I've been experiencing, put me and my 809 into her system and before I hung up with her a FedEx shipping label had arrived to my email for M-F next day shipping. I confirmed today that it has arrive in Miami and I'll do what I can to be patient for the next 2-4 weeks. I'll let everyone know how everything works when I get it back. I already love this gun, despite a couple small issues. I can't wait to see how much I love it when it comes back.

I'm curious about your problems - what sort were they?

I've been having to fiddle with my PT809 of late too (3500 or so rounds). The trigger won't reset on dry fire, because it was jamming on unburned fine powder. I had to shoot it out from the back with Gunscrubber. Q-tips just wedge the powder in even more.

I'm getting occasional first round failures to feed when using the slide release (yeah yeah yeah), which I'm thinking is due to a worn recoil spring (the spring is not completely compressed when the slide is locked back, unlike when you pull it all the way back to slingshot). Taurus thinks it's a magazine problem but I want to test out my pet theory.

The firing pin sometimes gets stuck in the firing pin channel when I degrease it after cleaning. Taurus says don't use the degreaser because it may be leaving a residue. Um okay. I'll try to clean the firing pin hole with a pipecleaner. I suspect that's the problem, because I'm getting a few light strikes (1-2 per 100) that could be attributed to high primers or crud in the actual orifice.

I'm ordering new firing pin and recoil springs - the separation anxiety would be bad.

andreew: Here's my thread on the trigger reset issue: http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/p...other-taurus-pistols/62679-new-pt809-trigger-not-resetting-during-dry-fire.html. I believe it's not resetting due to the trigger bar getting hung up on the hammer assembly. I've read a recent threat around here somewhere where an 809c had a bent trigger bar that Taurus replaced.

Here's the thread where I discussed issues with the extraction flight path of spent casings: http://www.taurusarmed.net/forums/smithing/63110-factors-affecting-extracted-brass-flight-path.html. In short, casings are ejecting low and straight back at the shooter. And handful of shooters all experienced the same annoying problem.

But with 600-800 rounds through it, I've NEVER had an FTF, a failure to extract or a stovepipe. It's fired every round and cycled then next flawlessly. No issues feeding the first round from a fresh mag either. So relatively speaking, these are minor issues that I'm hoping will be fixed quickly and easily in one visit to Taurus.

Thanks for your comments. The spent shells sometimes land on my forehead from day 1 too, but I figured it was "normal" - such problems are reported for many other pistols with wide ejection ports. I've heard that Taurus can make it better though.

Do you think that the trigger bar was in-spec when installed, but grew out-of-spec upon use? Maybe that might explain my trigger reset problem too.

Would you keep us posted here? If Taurus can fix your problems maybe they can fix mine too.

No, the trigger reset was an issue since new. I thought that maybe is was due to some packing grease getting in the way of the reset spring and that with some use and cleanings it would work itself out. But that didn't seem like it was going to happen. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted.

It's BACK! It spend two weeks plus 1 day in Miami before begin shipped back. The work order that came home with it indicated that the trigger bar was adjusted and that the slide was not moving freely (seemed ok to me) and it was "replaced". Would they have replaced the original, stamped the new one with my original serial number and then destroyed the original slide? I'm not sure how these things work. So apparently they believe that my extractor/ejector was fine and that it was ejecting funny because of how the slide was cycling. I'm a detail oriented person and I'd love a few paragraphs on what they diagnosed, but then these things would just take longer I suppose...

I can confirm that the trigger is now resetting properly into DA when it should. I'm planning a quick trip to a local range tomorrow to see how the ejection path is looking.

Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in me, my 809 and my service experience with Taurus. So far, I'm pretty pleased.

So, 3 rounds of Federal 115 gr FMJ into my range session with my newly returned 809 I get pelted in the forehead with a spent casing. I'm VERY disappointed. I guess I'll be calling Taurus again in the morning. I was OK with a trip to Miami to make it work, but a second trip makes me very upset. Here's a photo of my "injury":

The paperwork said that the slide had been replaced, although I honestly couldn't tell. It was like new when it left and like new when it returned. That's why I had posted the question about how they would handle the serial number. It's clean and in it's case and will ride with me tomorrow. A phone call to Taurus and a trip to FedEx are in my Monday fortune.

That was my thinking when it was brand new. I'm tired of getting plunked in the face with spent casings. So tomorrow I call them and ask then what I should do with it. If they say to shoot it some more, I'll go find a clear, full face shield like surgeons where or something along those lines. I really wanted this 809 to be something to brag about to my Smith and Kimber toting uncle who taught me to hunt and shoot and to my brother-in-law who became highly skilled with a Baretta 92 in the Marine Corps Security Forces. I'm definitely not bragging yet.

I may have been the original poster who had issues with his 809 who had the same issue. Was a good gun. Good trigger. Nice sights. Just never did get the ejection issue straightened out, even after they replaced it. I tried different ammo, different people shooting it, different grip and grip strengths (how hard I gripped it), nothing really seemed to work. I had almost 1k rounds through the 2nd gun and finally decided that I couldn't conceal carry a gun that was just as likely to take out my unprotected eye as it was to protect me from danger, so I traded it in. Now, don't get me wrong. I still love my PT92, but my concealed carry gun is an M&P9c which works well for me, because I shoot a full size M&P in IDPA. I hope that someday they figure out what's going on with all the extract issues with the 809 as I think it's a really nice gun. I liked everything about it with the exception of getting beat to death every-time I shot it.

I have a question about::These people that call CS and tell them of a problem and CS sends them a FEDEX mailing label to return it to FL:: They told me to take mine back to the dealer and let him send it in that they only pay for return shipping, cost me $20 for my dealer to do it >

Yep I only had it one day before it broke. checked with them today, they have had it for 16 days and said it was just being scheduled to go in for repairs, not my idea of fast service like most mention on here.. Sorry for being so grumpy, I am old and hate to wait for things.

Taurus called last week... It seems they couldn't fix the trajectory on the spent casings so they are sending me a new 809. My FFL holder should have it tomorrow at the latest. I'm leaving town early on Friday so I'm not certain if I'll get to a range by then, but I'll try and let everyone know how it does. I certainly cannot complain about the customer service aspect of this whole situation though. In my opinion, Taurus is doing everything reasonable to make this right. If the new 809 has an issue, and I hope it doesn't, I'll see if they will give me credit toward a different model. Wish me luck!

Update: My new 809 is out for delivery! I hope to get to the FFL tonight to pick it up.

I finally got my hands on the new 809 a couple evenings back. There was some interesting "goings on" with Taurus getting it shipped out to my FFL holder, but to make a long story short, I've got it now. It got a good cleaning yesterday and will probably get another cleaning today just to make sure I got the "crud" out. Plan to get to an indoor range tomorrow and I'll let everyone know how it runs.

Oh, and I'm wondering if anyone has had a firearm replaced by Taurus like this. It seems I need a way to report to the Michigan State Police where I registered my original 809 that I no longer have it... Any thoughts on this topic? I've received no paperwork from Taurus regarding my original.

Glad to hear you're taken care of, and hope it all works out well for you. While I've had two replacements from Taurus, I can't help with the registration issue. We don't have THAT here in Texas. Regardless, Taurus wouldn't be involved in the state's issue anyway, just Federal regs. I would suggest taking any documentation you have for the return, along with the new gun to your LGS for starters. Good luck with that. Happy Shootin' and Be Safe.

So I made it to the range yesterday and I honestly wasn't thrilled. I have failure to feed problems that I never experienced with the other one. The rounds were frequently going off the feed ramp and getting stuck to the left or the right. As for the ejection path of the spent casings, well it seemed to me to be more of the same. Lots of the them were ejecting low and toward the shooter with many striking my glasses or ear muffs and several so low that they were trying to get down my shirt collar. I got through 100 rounds before frustration set in and I went to my 709 for a couple hundred. I'm not giving up. I really want this to be a great gun for me. I'll get to 500 rounds before I call them again and I'm going to try some different ammo. I was using mostly cheap Federal 115gr and I want to try some 124 gr and 147 gr to see if those make the gun cycle differently and improve the ejection path. After that, I might be asking if Taurus will trade me for a 24/7 since that was my other top choice.

On the registration issue, I think I'll call Taurus on Monday and ask for some written confirmation of the return and replacement. I've got my paperwork for the new one submitted to my local police department already.

Thanks everyone for your support and interest in my issue!
