I have been on several gun forums over the years. When I wanted to get a Glock 36, I went to Glocktalk and picked up tons of info. The 1911 Forum is nice, the HighRoad has some useful info, FireArmsTalk is not bad, and the Browning High Power Owners Forum is quite useful.
But, in all the visits I have made to other gun forums, I have never seen such dedication and enthusiasm in promoting a firearm such as you guys do the PT1911. I have never seen pro's and con's so freely discussed without prejudice and "snobbery" as you guys do. You all obviously, as I do, love shooting and are kind enough to share your views without bad-mouthing other guns or each other.
You have so impressed me as to the functioning and reliability of the PT1911 as compared to its' higher priced cousins that I ordered my PT1911SS from Bud's yesterday.
I have owned, for a very short period of time, a Springfield Armory compact 45 and found it most distressing as far as functioning goes and it was not a joy to shoot. I do love my Glock 36 and until I ran into you guys, I assumed that Glock was the only company that produced a well functioning .45 right out of the box. I've always told my son that unless he spent a couple of thousand for one of the big name 1911's that he'd better expect to buy a .45 for $600 and then spend another $600 to get it fixed so it would function properly. Just reading the posts from you guys has changed my mind.
I am really impressed with your loyalty to the PT1911 and the way you display it.
I stopped at Wally World this morning on the way home from work and picked up 200 rounds of ammo and cannot wait for it to arrive so I can see for myself what a fine pistol it is!!!
I do have one question. What is the best stainless steel left handed safety to replace the factory ambi? I have seen them priced from $22 to $70+. Are they all basically the same. Does one swap out easier than the others?
I thank you guys for tips I've read in the posts and am really impressed with your loyalty to what others consider the under-dog of 1911's. I hope to join you as soon as mine arrives and I get a chance to try it out.
THANKS!!!!!! I can't wait to get my hands on that Stainless!!!

Congrats, let us know when you get it, and welcome aboard.
Thanks for the site compliment! Excellent bunch of folks here. As for your question, I don't have the answer. But I'll bet someone here does.![]()

Congrats on the stainless PT you will like it I am sure, the replacement safety you are questioning about I know for sure they have to be correctly fitted to the sear for proper engagement,I would let a competent smith do that for yourself, there are several quality manufacturers of aftermarket parts,Wilson Combat,Ed Brown,Chip Mcormick, and the like.once you start checking around you will find more choices than you can shake a holster at.![]()

Congrats on your new PT-1911!! You will love it I am sure. My wife bought me a PT-1911ALR for my B-day last December, and it has been flawless, and accurate as heck! It looks awesome to boot. Happy shooting, and I look forward learning from you, and your posts!!
IF GUNS CAUSE CRIME THEN ALL MINE ARE DEFECTIVE
Thanks for the kind remarks about TA! It's a good group of people here. Congrats on the new PT1911SS. I own a PT1911AL. It's my favorite pistol. I run approximately 7,000 rounds through mine and it still works perfectly. If you go to Brownell's website or get a copy of their catalog, you'll find all kinds of options for the safety. Let us know how she runs!
In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.
Every human being is different from each other. That fact, is precisely what makes us all the same.
Lets not over think common sense.
Although the PT1911SS on my future list of must-haves, I can't offer any feedback on your question... what I can do is agree with your assessment of the folks here!
I've joined 4 different gun forums this year and find myself here 90% of the time... not because a Taurus is my favorite or most used gun, but because of the members, knowledge, experience, attitudes, etc... here.
Welcome and enjoy -
funnyrunner,
Welcome to the wild world of the 1911 and to the Taurus firearm family.
Wilson Combat, Baer, Cylinder & Slide, STI and Ed Brown all make excellent thumb safeties, single or ambi. Unless you are trained and certified to do so, please have the replacement thumb safety installed/fitted by a qualified gunsmith. This is not a swap out and go item like a pair of grip panels. It must be properly fit to block the sear's movement or the gun could go off unexpectedly. God forbid that happens!!

Thanks for the advice Tex45ACP, I just ordered a safety from Brownells and I'll definitely let a qualified smithy swap it out. I'd hate to screw that up and ruin a nice 1911. Also got some Pachmayr grips but I think I can handle a couple of screws and do them myself. Will send pics when I have it all together.
