    1911 180 rounds...2 extractor issues

I purchased my 1911 on November 7th. I shot about 30 rounds before it was failing to eject on every round thereafter. Took it back to the gun shop two hours later. The gun was sent back to Taurus on the 8th. The gun was fixed and I received it back on November 18th. 9 business days. The dealer commented that even he was impressed on how quick the turn around was.

Gun issue is resolved, but I sure wish they would have indicated exactly what they did to the gun. 100 rounds later no more fte, so I guess whatever they did worked!

WELL.....it worked for 180 rounds. So today I am shooting and have a couple of malfunctions. The malfunction was somewhat similar to a stovepipe, but instead of the casing pointing straight up it was still oriented towards the chamber. It was about half ejected. I cleared the malfunction and continued my shooting

About 20 rounds later FTE, FTE, FTE, on every round. Closer inspection shows that the tip of the extractor is broken off.

So I can understand that these are wear items, but really? My confidence in this gun is really being tested. The gun was purchased to carry instead of the snub nose .38. However, at least I know the 38 will shot all 5 rounds!!

So back to the dealer and back to Taurus. Will update when they fix it again. However, I am looking for an explanation this time around.

This is my first 1911 maybe I should have looked for a colt or springfield??

You are correct that the extractor failing is premature. A wear part, for sure, but one that shouldn't need maintenance for tens of thousands of rounds. At this point, I would simply replace it with one from Ed Brown, Wilson, or a plethora of other makers. Factory extractors are chosen for cost, while these replacements are engineered for good service over a long life.

    Cost is usually under $20.00.

Just curious, have you ever dropped a round into the chamber from the top of the slide to test fire or load the 9th round?

Welcome to the world of the 1911, not just the Taurus PT-1911, but all 1911's. The 1911 extractor is like a lightbulb. I don't care who makes it or what they make it out of, if it sticks to the original John Browning design it will be like a lightbulb. It can go out immediately, or last a hundred thousand rounds, or go out anywhere in between. When you send it back to Taurus this time, get a spare extractor. It is the best insurance.

Although, if you know how to replace it, they can save you some time and just mail you one, actually you should get 2.

No. Prior to buying the gun I read plenty in regards to not doing that. Whereas I am new to the 1911 I have carried a variety of Glocks over the last 20 years. Never dropped one in the chamber and released the slide during that entire period either!

The extractor on a Taurus is slightly different than a 'stock' 1911 extractor. Taurus owners who have swapped the extractor for an aftermarket unit have reported trouble keeping the firing pin block in place afterwards. I'm thinkin' a genuine Taurus extractor is the best bet for a PT1911. My $.02

I can understand that. My real concern is the reliability of this pistol and confidence that is just a fluke in regards to these failures. What I hear you saying is this is a 1911 thing, and not just a PT1911 thing?

I just wanted to have confidence that if I pull this gun out of my waistband that it will go bang more then once, consistently, if need be. Trying to find that piece of mind has me contemplating taking a monetary hit on this gun and finding a more reliable 1911 if that is what I NEED to do...still trying to figure that out.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of ammo did you put through it?
