New PT1911 owner, got a problem with hollow points jamming.

I bought the pistol (blued w/ picatinny rails) about a month ago brand new. Cleaned all the excess oil that was in it from the shipping and relubed it. Put about 250 rounds of FMJ ammo through it with absolutely no problems.

I then bought a box of winchester .45 230GR JHP and the first round seems to get stuck and isn't feeding into the chamber. It only seems to be with hollow points.

Is this a common problem? I really like the pistol, it shoots really well and no other problems except this.

What is the issue other then possibly the magazine? I seem to see this topic a lot when searching for it, with the pistol having issues with feeding hollow points.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

Welcome from Kentucky to the site!
Believe it or not, may just be the type of ammo. Two of my pistols will not shoot Remington/UMC green box but will shoot ANYTHING else without problems, May try some different ammo before going too in depth.

    Thanks.

Well after playing around with it here at my desk and continuing to load the weapon, I find that if I don't load all 8 rounds and just load the magazine with 7, it feeds perfectly fine. However, it's if I load the magazine with 8 rounds, the 1st hollow point will not feed. This doesn't occur with a FMJ.

Common issue? What's the problem, is it the stock magazine? The frame on the pistol? I don't wanna blow $30-$40 on a aftermarket magazine and have the same issue occur.

I plan to have the pistol as my carry weapon and this is a pretty serious issue. I don't need the gun to jam in a time of need and it's useless if I can't figure out what is causing the malfunction.

    Thanks.

Other then polishing the feed ramp there are about a bunch of things that could be the problem. One WW box ammo has given me fits but Golden Sabers fly right through. 1911's are known for being finicky and I would go ahead and run another 250 of hardball through it. Then try a few different brands of HP's. Also pick up some Chip McCormick or Novak mags. The Novak's are just like the Taurus brand but have better springs.

The 1911 has a big following here so you will probable be flooded with advice. Congrats on a great gun and good luck with your problem, I'm sure its something simple. By the way welcome to the forum and don't be afraid to ask or just jump right in. We are a friendly bunch.

You are fortunate that it does feed JHP, I have yet to try my RI 1911 with 7 rounds of JHP. The 1911 is designed to be used with ball amo, but I understand that with a little tunning it can handle hollow points.

Here's a picture of the malfunction, hopefully this helps in diagnosing the issue. I am not holding the slide back, it is locked back due to the malfunction.

I really, really enjoy this pistol and I hope this isn't a major problem. It seems to have no issue if it's only loaded with 7 rounds, if anything until I can resolve this I'll just load it with 7 or just use FMJ's.

Well, that's true, worse case scenario I'll carry with ball ammo and a .45 is a big enough round to put my mind at rest if it finds its target.

You need to shoot at least 200-300 rounds of fmj through any semi-auto before you start feeding it hollow-points, and even then, all hollow-points are not created equal and you have to find the ones your particular critter likes..

I agree with Jake. Shoot a few hundred rounds through the firearm first. Also when selecting defensive ammo, pay close attention to the bullet profile. The edge around the hollowpoint cavity can be rough and cause a problem. Rounded is better. Federal even makes an Expanding Full Metal Jacket.

I also agree with Jake. And emphasize that hollowpoints differ even more. My 1911's all like Golden Saber. If you have problems with a lot of different HP profiles, take a look at CORBON - Pow'RBall.
It's got the profile of ball ammo.
