    New Red Oak grips

These were a bit more of a challenge to build because the wood is very dense. It doesn't take stain very well either for the same reason, but I thought they turned out okay and since they're expanded more to fit the frame, they feel much better in my hand. I'm going to try some Teak wood this weekend if I get a chance. Practice, practice..

Nice Panda! I'd like to hear how mesquite is to work with. There's a company in San Angelo that uses mesquite in grips. I might try that myself sometime, just don't know what to expect.

All I've used so far is the original Taurus plastic grips as a pattern. No doubt a jig would make things go faster, but right now I'm not looking for speed, just quality.

If you have a link to those grips, I'd like to see them. I don't have any Mesquite right now, but I'm on the lookout for some. I'll post up a set as soon as I find some.

I've been thinking about that too, but I've never done any checkering and I don't own any of the tools. Maybe one day!

Another fine set of grips, pretty soon you'll be able to have a different set of grips for every day of the month!

Nice job Panda! I've got a bunch of scrap wood left over from previous projects and have often thought about making a set of grips for my 1911. I've got cherry, bubinga, lacewood, orange, apple, Austrailian Oak, walnut, popular, and beech. Probably a few others that I don't remember. I've been tossing them into a small scrap box for nearly 30 years.

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.' Thomas Jefferson
