Factory Magazine Locks Slide open with 1 Still Round in Mag

As stated above 1 of my mags will lock the slide back with 1 round still in the magazine. This started after 50 or so rounds were fired. The other works fine so far. Both followers look identical so I don't have a clue why this is happening. Any ideas other than the mags are junk?

If you haven't already, field strip your gun and see if there are traces of copper on the end of the slide stop that the magazine follower pushes against. I had to stone mine (gently, a little at a time) until it cleared the nose of the ammo coming up the mag (I hadn't had a malfunction, but the copper shows up pretty good).

If there is still a round in the magazine, how could the magazine follower be part of the problem? It wouldn't be making contact with anything. I would suspect the magazine lips are bent. Something is making contact with the slide.

First, I am assuming you have the "good" mag and "bad" mag marked. I would compare them closely and see if I could spot any differences.

In any case, Taurus will replace the mag free of charge. If you can't figure out what's wrong, take it to your dealer and have him send it back for exchange.

Put one round in each magazine and compare where a line drawn across the top of the magazine lips intersects the round. I bet the defective magazine allows the round to ride higher which exposes the follower to the slide lock. If this is the case you could "pinch" the magazine lips together or just send it back to Taurus.

It is either a bad magazine (probably the lips as has been said) or the slide stop was not fitted properly. I'd start by marking your magazines to see if it's a problem with one, or all of them. If it's just one magazine then you've found the problem. If it happens with more than one magazine your slide stop probably isn't fitted properly. If you are familiar with 1911s then you can easily fix the problem yourself by fitting the slide stop properly. If you aren't, then you can either take it to a local smith (my suggestion) or have Taurus pick up the shipping and send it to them. For the cost of getting it fitted, I would just take it to a local smith and only be out of a gun for a couple of weeks vs. 6+ weeks with Taurus.

Thanks for the replys. I shoot only cast bullets but haven't found any deposits on the slide stop. I'll carefully compare the lips of the mag causing the problem. If any difference i'll tweak the lips. I've put several hundred rounds through the good mag with no problems. Problem started when I used the 2nd mag. I will also try GI mags . By the way the GI mag follower seems to ride lower than the Taurus mags.
