I haven't had to replace the guide rod in my PT1911, but I have put two Wilson FLGRs in two other 1911s. I picked up one at a local gunshow and the other from Midway.Originally Posted by Three Percent

While cleaning my pt1911 following her second trip to the range, I noticed something that may explain why my frame scratches the slide forward of the dust cover (only on the left side) - the guide rod is slightly bent, right at the junction of the base and the rod.
I want to replace it with an after-market, one-piece, full length guide rod.
Anyone have a suggestion/recommendation on a good, drop-in?
Thanks in advance!

I've been wanting to change the guide rod on mine to a stainless version from Wilson Combat, as soon as the funds present themselves. I've used parts from him and they seem to work pretty good.
Thanks for the replies. I am leaning toward a stainless one from Wilson, also.

Why use a full length guide rod? Get a regular guide rod.. they work without problems.

Full length because OEM was full length. I have no issues with the full length guide rods. Don't find they hinder taking down the piece.

that's true, I really don't find any issues with disassembly using a full length guide rod.
i like the full length.
i've never field stripped a 1911 with a two piece. once you get past the recoil spring deal, the rest falls apart
i have a wilson tungsten 3 oz guide rod i think i'm going to try on my taurus or colt. supposedly helps reduce flip(taurus has hardly any) so it'll be fun if anything.

I recently joined the forum and have found numerous thoughtful threads here. Regarding the full length guide rod, I struggle with the neccesity for them. I have several 1911's with and several without and can't really discern a difference in performance!
One argument against the FLGR's, however, made by a number of tactical instructors is the fact that, with the FLGR installed, several "one-handed" reload drills, which require racking the slide by placing the standard recoil spring plug against a fixed a object and applying pressure, can't be executed with a gun equipped with the FLGR. This may be of importance if utilizing the gun for duty use or CCW purposes.
I finally went with the Wilson 1-piece FLGR, and ordered it from Midway.
After I get that worked in, then I can concentrate on removing the scratches on the slide, caused buy the bent rod pushing the slide into the frame on one side.
Next will be a refinish of the piece.
