Will Beretta Mags work in the PT92 and PT99?

    Hey everyone.

I'm sure the answer to this question is on here somewhere, but I cannot find it. So, will the Beretta mags fit the PT92 and PT99 without modification?

    Thanks!

Boy, I did a quick search and the answers were all over the place. Some said yes, some said no, a couple said you can modify the Beretta mag to work, and still others said that you can use Beretta mags in a Taurus, but not visa versa. So, we need someone who has tried this procedure to give us a good answer!

Over the years, Beretta has changed the location of it's mag catch slightly. Early guns, and their magazines, could interchange. Today, they have to be modified to fit properly. Just buy Taurus magazines, and be done with it. There are some trash M9 mags out there.

I just went through this with a friend and we tried the 99 and the Beretta on his recent built 92 and the short answer is neither would latch. There is no doubt a skilled mechanic could put new cuts in the magazines and make them work, but my question is why would you want to when you can order the correct magazine?

Those must be very early run guns and mags that will swap. My PT92 is a couple of decades old and Beretta mags don't begin to have the same mag catch.

With a minor modification they will work.

I modified over a dozen mil surp Beretta 92FS mags for a neighbor and they work fine in his Taurus M92.

The modification involves removing 1mm or sheet metal off the top edge of the magazine locking notch.

A small flat file works fine, but is a bit slow and tedious.

If you have good light, a steady hand, and a dremel tool with a cut off disk, the mod goes much quicker.

I think it is hit and miss, I have 2 Taurus PT-99 magazines that will only work in the first version of the PT-99, and they will not work in the other versions of the PT-99 with the current magazine release. I have chosen not to modify these. The second and third version PT-99 magazines will work in all 3 versions. The aftermarket Beretta magazines that I purchased in the mid 90's would not work in my 1st version PT-99 without a minor modification, however they work fine in the second and third version PT-99's with out the modification. Confused?

Last year I bought two aftermarket PT-99 magazines they would not work in the first version PT-99 with out slight modification, and they work fine in the second and third version PT-99's before and after modification. Still confused?

The modification only takes a minute if you have an original magazine and a Dremel tool. Line up the cut outs and go to it.

Or just buy the Mec-Gars. The same as Taurus, and 25% cheaper.

Thanks guys! I am looking at picking up a 92 or 99 and, with all the surplus Beretta stuff out there, was wondering. Never know when some surplus mags might fall cheap into your lap.

    Have a great weekend!

The military has been cheerfully surplussing a couple of million CMI mags, because they didn't work. Beware of them. The new CMI mags, on the other hand, are fine.
