I'm really pleased with my Sport. They are quality rifles. I may buy a different handguard, but only so that I can attach a bipod to it.
I saw a segment on American Rifleman the other night, where it was stated, S&W makes their barrels in house. Also tolerances were tighter than some other rifles. It will make you a good rifle, especially for the purposes you've mentioned. Good luck with it!

I have been thinking real hard about buying an AR for the same use as you mentioned and have pretty much made up my mind that the M&P 15 Sport will be the one I purchase when I've saved enough pennies. From poking around various web sellers and chatting with my LGS I think you may find the most challenging part will be finding someone who has one in stock that they can sell to you.

Yeah, the situation really sucks! Everyone I talk to says that they don't have any in stock, don't know when they will get more, and the guns they do get will probably sell extremely quickly after receiving them. Unfortunately, I would imagine that this trend will only increase as we get closer to the election.

I'm glad to hear from some happy owners of this rifle. It just confirms what I have read in other places. Here's a pretty good article on the M&P 15 Sport for anyone else considering this rifle:

Gun Review: Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport | The Truth About Guns

I guess if I can't get one now, I'll just have to wait another four years until they will be available again.
Q: Why do you carry a gun?
A: It’s much lighter than carrying a police officer

MP15 owner here and I have nothing but the best accalodes for it. It will digest every .223 round I have bought for it, mostly plinking cheap $3.99 to $4.99 Tula, Silver Bear, Brown Bear whereas my Yankee Hill HBAR balks at most of them.

If you do get the Sporter and it comes in whitout the heat shield on the Forearm, holler and I will send you mine. I switched over to a railed forearm right after I got mine and its just taking up space. Like the others have said, unless you're gonna be in a combat situi, the dust cover and foreward assist aren't necessary. I think Magpul or some other manufactor has a railed slip-on forearm thats just as light as the high dollar quad rails too for a lot less too.

*lol..I hafta post ya some pics so I can shove you over the edge and go git ya a Sporter too PCS01*

I have a friend that bought the Smith+Wesson M+P 15 .22LR, he absolutely loves his. I realize they are different calibers but we had it at the range last Saturday and it was a blast to shoot. We put about 250 rounds through it. If the .223 is as good as the .22 you will love it, he paid $427.00 for it cause of low funds and couldn't wait for the money for a .223 version.lol Even with the iron sights (didn't have time to get a scope) it was a lot of fun to shoot. Hope you get one and are as happy as he is. Now he has me wanting one and I can't afford it.

ARs seem to be a lot like many other people describe 1911s... once you get a chance to shoot one, it's just a matter of time before you buy one... or four. Aren't buddies great... "Here, try shooting my new [AR/1911/other high-priced toy]. It won't hurt you to try it just once... go on, try it." They can be a lot like crack dealers, knowing that once you try it, you're gonna be hooked. Oh well, I guess there's worse things a person could be addicted to.

    Vonzipper,

Those are some great looking rifles. I'd love to have any one of those. What model is your M&P? Like I said, just like crack dealers... thanks buddy.

We borrowed the S&W sport for the kids one day at the range. A very kind gent gave us a bucket load of ammo. That thing was A BLAST!!!!!! At 100 yards we were making a coke can dance around the range using the original sights. Accurate as hell! Recoil... even the smallest kids handled well. Was a pleasure to shoot! Range told me it was one of their most popular rental rifles. And had no problems with over 7000 rounds through it!

Mine started out as Model MP15OR Rifle about two years ago when CTD had them for $849.00. Added some Magpul front and rear sights, a EOtech 522 and a 4x Flip Magnifer along with a midway front rail.. At a 100yds I'm putting in a 5" grouping with my eyesight. My nephew and a friend can bring that grouping down to about 2-3"

I don't even read what you type, I just look at the pictures. Great photos.
a.k.a. 2LOGICL. While I do not enjoy the misery of others, I do find comfort in it.
