I guess those solid retaining pins aren't so good after all. I see a lot of places have them, Brownell's and Midway for starters. Check out the product reviews on the Midway item: Firing Pin Retaining Pin LR-308 Matte
I guess those things break pretty easily. Glad I ordered the cotter pins
Went with the perma pin and never looked back. Those stupid cotter pins always got mangled in my paws. Just find a gun store that's AR heavy and they should carry them.
I had a similar problem and here is what I did, it took about 5 minutes.
Remove the pin and slide it onto a feeler gauge, I used .015
Grabbed the end of the pin with long nose pliers and gently rolled the end inward.

Now the pin goes in with a simple push and wiggle.
