    My Saiga 7.62x39 conversion

    saiga 7.62x39.JPGstarted like this

    saiga18.JPGFinished product.

Saiga 7.62 coversion kit from Carolina shooters supply, Saw pistol grip, Tapco stalk, ati fore hand guard, spring bipod for grip, Tasco red/green dot sight (cheap but works great), I installed a bullet guide so that regular AK mags work. Shoots great, and I had a lot of fun doing this conversion. It was the first Ive tried.

I was wondering when something like this would show here. I did a conversion about a year ago. Fully 922R compliant. I have a really nice write up on youtube.com complementing Ed and Auston. Do a search on that, these guys were good. All the drilling all the dremeling isn't that bad. Tapping the bullet guide worried me the most but was easy. Did you paint the receiver after you removed the trigger group? I think I bought kit #2 from Carolina, Tapco G2 trigger, Tapco stock, etc. Then I bought another Saiga from Classic already converted. I also removed all the old furniture and replaced it with Carolina Picatinny stuff to keep that barrel cool. The last thing I want to do is cut the barrel shroud off, thread it and get a decent FP. They have become my favorite rifle. Sorry AR lovers.

I have two replacement gas tubes, but niether of them work properly. The piston doesnt travel through without getting bound up. It sucks. I have a really cool looking upper hand guard that fits on the new gas tube but i cant use it. ive tried filing it but with no luck. Anyhoo, I like the rifle and its a blast to shoot.

I have a question about this "bullet guide" you speak of. I have a ZAS-PAP 7.62x39 carbine too, its a sporter type that only takes 10rnd mags. I would love to where I can get that bullet guide and some instructions on installing it in order to use my 30 and 40 round AK mags. TIA...and great conversion there too bkmorris.

A bullet guide is a small metal plate the sits on the trunion just below the opening to the barrel. On an AK it can be flat or round, you'll have to check nyour gun. Carolina shooters supply has both and videos on the web site for installation. You just sit the guide in place and mark the small hole in the center. The guide comes with a drill bit and a tap. drill the hole, then tap it. Be very careful with the tap. Its small and can break. You're up a creak if that happens. after you tap the hole, place the guide and screw with thread lock. Its not too hard to do.

    Nice Saiga.

I just did my Saiga 7.62x39 conversion a couple of months ago and I'm really happy with it. I'll post some pics later in a new thread. I did some mods to the OEM handguard on mine, added the Tapco G2 FCG, added a ATI StrikeForce adjustable stock, a Mako pistol grip, a hardguard rail for a bipod or a UTG hand grip. I also have a RRages Red/Green dot sight that I need to sight in yet.
