If i take my Mosin to the range with me, i usually have a 20 oz. Pepsi bottle filled with a 50/50 mix of water and ammonia. You can grab that stuff alot cheaper than you can Hoppe's or Remoil, and i have yet to run out of ammonia. I just remove the bolt, open the bottom of the magazine and douse the whole thing in the solution. No real reason to save it, so i'm pretty liberal with the application. And once you run about 40 rounds or more through them, those old Mosins stay pretty warm for quite a while. Then i dry out the excess, and clean everything as i normally would. It adds maybe 3-4 minutes to my usual cleaning time, which is fine by me if i can save a few bucks shooting old ammo.

Best way to do it IMO. The ammonia makes the water more wet to help rinse away the salts. And since the gun is generally warm once you shoot about 40 rounds, it dries pretty fast on it's own. Than a normal cleaning and next thing you know it's back to firing time.
