You can build what you want for less than you can buy if you have the time to wait for the great deals and if you do not add the cost of any AR specific building tools.
For my first I wanted a full warranty from a reliable manufacturer.
I would still like to build one someday.

That's what I did too. 1st was an S&W M&P15. I started out building the second, then realized I could buy a complete upper for less than I could build it, and buying gives me a warranty like you said. The only way that building an upper saves any cash is if you want something very specific that no one (or not many) sells, or if you want something high end. Building a lower is easy and cheap though, if you are willing to wait on the deals.

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered a stripped upper. It may be a while before I get started on the build, but I will post it up when I do. It was kind of an impuse buy. I found a good deal on some scope rings and was going to order just those, but the shipping was like $10. So, I looked around for some other stuff to order and found a Korean Glock mag and an Aero Precision stripped upper.

This will be my first venture into building an upper, but I have two stripped lowers sitting in my closet so I figured, "what the hell?" Looks like my BRD is not going away.

FYI - they have assembled upper receivers (just the receiver, forward assist, and dust cover assembly) for $80 if anyone is interested. This is a pretty good price, and about $20 less than most. This place is also running a Holiday deal where you get a free stripped upper (same type I bought) with the purchase of a Black Hole Weapons barrel. I think it's worth a look if you're looking to do a build. They are polygonal rifled barrels.

Here is the sight - Surplus Ammo's Current Specials

Here is a discussion I found about the barrels. - Blackhole Weaponry Barrels ? - M4Carbine.net Forums

I built an AR for a buddy a month ago. He wanted a top end AR so it cost him about 1400 when it was said and done. I used a stripped PWS lower with a Daniel Defense lower kit and a Jard 1.5lbs trigger. The upper for the most part is Daniel Defense minus the charging handle, gas tube, gas block and Hogue free float hand guard. If you are planning on building the upper yourself I would recommend using the DPMS AR multi-tool and their action block. With these two tools, a few allen wrenches and a vise were the only tools I needed to build the AR.
