Old mossberg 20 guage bolt action

Got a problem. My stepdad dug his old mossberg 20 gauge bolt action shotgun down from the attic and in cleaning it has somehow gotten the bolt inseted back in sideways. Now the bolt will not come back out to be re-inseted correctly. We have been fiddling with it for a while and can't figure out how it even went back in the way it is. He said it just dropped right in, but he realized right away it was in wrong and now it will not come back out. Anybody have any helpfull advice on fixing this so he can get the gun back together? I can get photos if need be. It is a very old gun and he would like to try and bring it back to life.

Have you tried pulling the trigger back as you attempt to remove the bolt?

There is also a steel ball in the (what is normally) the top left side of the bolt that is raised and lowered on a cam by rotating the bolt handle, so I would try rotating the bolt handle and pulling trigger back at the same time till you find the correct angle of bolt handle and it should come out. I just got out an old mossberg 16 guage bolt I gave my dad for a crow gun years ago. I didn't try real hard to replicate you situation as I didn't want to get in the same shape. I think the steel ball in the bolt may be the problem. Try rotating the bolt handle and see if that will loosen the bolt if it is frozen

Re: Old mossberg 20 guage bolt action

There is a small track on each side of the reciever that the bolt slides into. He has somehow managed to insert the bolt so that it is 90 degrees from where it should sit in the tracks. We tried compressing the two pins (not sure what they are called) on each side of the bolt and backing it out to no avail. Also tried moving the bolt into the cocked position with a screwdriver hoping to release something with no luck. I'll try your advice Jake and see what happens. Problem is, with the bolt in the position it is in, it will only rotate about 1/3 of what is should in either direction. In the mean time here is a photo of it so everyone can see what is going on a little better than me describing it....

I know, not the best photo. Taken with a camera phone.

Also try turning the action upside down while doing what I previously said so gravity will work on releasing the ball

Re: Old mossberg 20 guage bolt action

Will do. I'll be back over my folks place Christmas eve and Ill take another whack at it. The gun is old and beat to shit. He told me it was found during a remodel of a house when he was a teenager, the barrel got plugged on an outing once and split at the end when he tried to fire it. He sawed a couple inches off of it to fix the split. lol. That was probably 40 years ago and the gun has been in his fathers attic for about 30 years. You can imagine the shape it's in, but he wants to try and bring it back to life for sentimental reasons. Thanks for the tip. Hope it works!

Bring some good penetrating oil with you when you head over there. I've had good luck with Kroil (it started out as an industrial lubricant I think). Soak the bolt assembly once you arrive and let it sit until later on to hopefully free up anything that's sticking.

Also, you may want to measure the overall barrel length to confirm that it's still over the legal minimum. It's probably fine but double-checking is a good idea.

Re: Old mossberg 20 guage bolt action

Got it apart. We finally resorted to I held the barrel and he yanked the bolt a couple of times and it finally popped out. This bolt does not have a ball imbedded in it as you described Jake. The two halves of the bolt are still not rotating independantly though. There is a small pin situated in a groove on the side of the bolt that looks as though it is bent, but that may be the way it is supposed to be. I am not at all familiar with the workings of a bolt action. at least we have it apart now. Thats one step closer to at least being back together correctly, if not functional.
