Hi
Take a look at the Springfield XDm 9mm 3.8. Great, reliable gun, fun to shoot, very accurate. If you are looking just for a range gun it is hard to beat the Taurus PT 92 AFS. I own and shoot both. Just sayin.

In 9mm, I've really enjoyed shooting my Taurus PT99 and Smith & Wesson Model 910S. I bought them both used at reasonable prices. Both are accurate with adjustable sights and fun to shoot. If you're going for 22lr, I'd suggest you look at the Smith & Wesson model 22 semi-auto. It's dead nuts on accurate and you can shoot all day for pocket change.

My GSG 1911 .22 was $325 new. It's a tack driver right out of the box and it's been a great gun. Feels like a full size 1911, same weight and everything. Nice heavy steel mags too. Hold one somewhere if you can. I really like mine.

Beyond caliber what other factors come into play?? What is your budget and what features do you prefer in a gun (action, type of safety, size to fit, etc). Mag price is a factor that many overlook. People have touched on adjustable sights - yep on that for me.
If you are not 100% clear what you do want are there things that you definately don't want. Personally I shifted all my pistols around to light double action or striker fired. Pull - bang. Handle them safely no problem. My one exception is my 709 but it acts much like a striker and it does have an external safety - I pocket that gun a lot do I decided that I was okay with that feature and I can choose not to use it if I want. A decocker is another story.
Prople can and will rattle off favorite guns and possible choices all day long. A little more input from you might help narrow the suggestions and make this more helpful for you.
As long as it is a range gun I'd look at full size guns and long barrels - that's me.
Bargains = Ruger P95 (a decocker but an affordable hi cap tack driver)
Glock or Sig LEO turn ins - they will be used but cared for (check CDNN, Buds and Summit guns for deals)
1911s have come up and start at $400 (check Buds front page) and go up from there - a breed unto themselves - a pleasure tu shoot!
Back to Ruger - the SR line is (IMHO) outstanding.
Again there are so many choices out there - help us help you!

It's $95 over your budget but an LEO turn in Glock 17 will be a great range gun and of you ever decide to move on to competition you will be set with one of these. Mags are affordable - $22 new, 12-15 used. Mark at Summit is out of stock right now - here's a link. He resocks frequently. Firearms, Guns, Rifles. Grain Valley, Missouri.
have a run through the site - always good and interesting items.
