I recommend the 809. I have the 845 and its an awesome gun. I believe the 809 will be just fine. See if you can find one used.
For my consideration for a range gun it must meet Old Fire Horse's criteria, I would add cheap on ammo. First consideration would have to be a 22 rimfire, many model can be had for $300 that meet those objectives. If you want something center fire, 9mm is pretty much king of the ammo price wars, almost any other center fire ammo is going to run 50% more.
It will be hard to find a 9mm with those qualities and still be around $300, I would think a used PT99 would might get you there, I paid $379 and $399 for my PT99 AF and AFS new.
The Rossi 85 Rossi USA or 97 Rossi USA would both be good considerations and should be within your budget but man they are hard to come by.

I have a 2006 24/7 15,000 + rounds through it.Love it....accurate and NO problems, well apart from the rear site falling off! My son has a Hi-point which, when I get to fire it, is accurate, reliable, but I had to alter my usual grip because it has bits sticking out. But it is a nice weapon....I think he paid around $250.
Taking this country back....one job at a time!
In memory of BUTT. Thanks for, your wisdom, your humor and your willingness to pass it on. You ARE missed.
A proven .22lr rimfire semi-auto like a Browning Buckmark or Ruger MKIII is hard to beat. Neither are finicky on ammo. Both are as accurate as the shooter holding it.
There is absolutely nothing more fun than plinking away with a .22lr. Shoot all day long with a 550 round brick of Federal Bulk for $20.

I bought a used PT99 that had not been fired this past October...i have taken the gun and put about 800 rounds thru it. I couldn't be happier.
I stronly recommend a Springfield Armory XDM-5.25; they are designed for extreme accuracy and dependability. Fairly light for a full sized gun. They come in 9mm as well as .40 and .45.
I actually prefer shooting a full size revolver at the range. I use a Smith and Wesson 686 with adjustable rear sights. It's way more accurate that I will ever be. Reason I like the revolver is that it doesn't kill my thumb to reload magazines. I shoot six, drop the brass in my bag, reload and shoot some more. I can also practice both DA and SA shooting.
I own and shoot both my S&W and Taurus PT92, but the Smith is a better pure range gun.
In your price range I would say Ruger MK series to include the 22/45 22lr. My mk II is by far the most accurate handgun I own Randy
