I have a 2nd Generation DAO PT 145. I am used to the trigger, hit very well for my perceived ability. I would not trade it for a single action generation 3, as I feel very comfortable with one in the chamber. Although I would feel safe carrying it without the safety on, I do set the safety when it is by my bedside as I want to make sure I'm awake enough to perform one action before shooting. I have sleep-walked before.

I understand carrying with the safety on, but I prefer to have the safety off. I won't carry a gun if I have to do anything more than pull the gun, pull the trigger.
One guy behind the gun counter said when referring to a gun without any safety, "The best safety is up here", while pointing to his head. I have no concern about the gun going off in the holster, so I feel totally safe while carrying it. I started carrying my PT145 and put the Colt New Agent in the safe because it has to be cocked before it can be fired and I will not carry it cocked and locked.

I am disgusted by the overwhelming indifference and complacency of society that allows a wide gamut of problems to cripple the advancement and success of everyone.
I've started carrying with one in the chamber recently. It's still scary to think about it but mine is a Gen3 and I do keep the safety engaged and my holster covers the trigger completely. It may just take some getting used to but I do feel somewhat better knowing there's one less action I need to take in order to make it go boom if the SHTF

Your "free hand" might be too busy fending off blows or teeth.
No offense intended, but if a semiauto's loaded chamber bothers you that much, switch to a revolver.

I have never understood an unloaded weapon, what's the point? I carry safety on in a trigger covered leather holster. .
I BELIEVE IN GUN CONTROL, USE BOTH HANDS FOR MAXIMUM CONTROL.
If it had an exposed hammer, I could see some cause for concern if you have a holster without a thumb strap to prevent the hammer from accidentally getting caught but since there isn't, having a round in the chamber shouldn't be an issue. Personally, I would still have the safety on but that is up to the individual.
Try to get some practice drawing and disengaging the safety so you develop a muscle memory. They have red practice rounds that you can also pull the trigger and minimize any risk of damaging your weapon.

I carry something with me as well while Geocaching. Must of the caches we go after are in the hills and you never know what you might run into. What is your Geocache "Name"?
Mine tag name is "Blackrubiconrider"
I have been carrying my PT145 everyday for near a year now. It is a gen3 sa/da and always has one in the pipe with safety on. Granted at first it was a little unnerving but now it seems the only way to go.
It rides in my waistban with trigger fully covered, and I never pick up or unholster any gun with my finger near the trigger. If you are anal about never touching the trigger until on target then I would think you have nothing to worry about. The safety will cover one mistake of accidently touching the trigger, and if the safety ends up off for some reason you still have the "finger off the trigger".. and the long pull of the dao.
Also, your free hand may be busy pushing your child or spouse out of the way or pulling them behind you as you are trying to clear leather with your pistol. Also, some PD people I've talked to have said they are sometimes already reaching for their next mag as they are sighting in for their first shot (assuming you are comfortable shooting single handed).
A semi-auto without a round in the tube is just a really ineffectual short club IMHO.
I also agree with the revolver comment (and I also mean no offense). There are some nice 7-8 shot .357s out there that are just solid. The Taurus 608 is a great example. 8 shots of .357 with a 4" barrel. One question is do you carry concealed or semi concealed when you Geocache? If you do semi concealed, I'd go with a high round count revolver if the "one in the tube" makes you nervous. You are within a few rounds of your 45.
Along that line, there is a nice 608 with a 6 1/2 barrel in the for sale section in Colorado. Not sure where you are. If he were closer, it'd already be in my gun safe....
