My Dad taught me the same thing when I was a boy, and my drill sergeants reinforced this training during my Army Basic Combat Training.
I still clean my weapons after firing them. When I return from a deer hunt, regardless of whether I fired my rifle or not, I clean it before putting it in the gun safe.

Shoot and clean. Hoppes #9 in the barrel and slide, after cleaning, Hoppes lube on the slide. I just went to the range with a dirty pt145 that hadnt been cleaned from the last shooting (I know right, dont kill me). Never had a miss feed or a jam of any kind. Shot like it was supposed to.

I use Hoppes no 9 after every range visit. However since it is my home defence gun (along with my rock island) I also clean it every once in a while as I only go to the range every few months. I'm not an expert, I learn from forums.
Clean mine every time after the range. I never load a dirty gun with hollow point. I like Hoppe's bore cleaner and Hoppe's oil or Rem Oil. I am thinking about trying Gunzilla though.

Hoppes #9, the cleaner the better so every trip to the range, but just inspect the firearm and use your best judgement on cleaning. I still love Hoppes #9 for the job it does and I'm addicted to the smell of it also![]()
Does anyone have experience with Automatic Transmission Fluid as a gun cleaner/lube?

+1 on everytime it's fired. I just budget that cleaning time into the range time. I can't imagine not cleaning it.
Like many, my grandfather and Dad both taught me that caring for your tools pays off in the long run. Treat 'em right and they'll serve you well...in fact, most of 'em will outlive you! I've got a bunch of my grandfather's tools in my shop, right next to my Dad's.
Interestingly, this idea of caring for your tools (which serve you) works really well with people too. Treat those that serve you well, and it pays off!
