If I am remembering correctly, tritium is a radio active chemical they use in night sights that make them glow in the dark. I believe that tritium is used in Trijicon sights. Please correct me if I am mistaken.![]()
I'm not familiar with either of these types of night sights. I am looking to purchase a set of night sights for my

Down side is if what I read is correct, the tritium night sight effect decays away after about ten years. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

15 years... but for the price 150.00 to 200.00 that works out to .02 cents per day to .03 cents per day...

Thanks for the correct info. Your point is well taken on the per day cost. My concern would have more to do with availability of replacements in 15 years. Wait a minute. That is a silly concern. There will "always" be replacement sights for 1911's. Besides, the tritium sights should function as normal sights even after the tritium decays. duhOriginally Posted by autosurgeon

You guys are on the right path. Tritium gas (an isotope of hydrogen) is used to make the night sights glow. Yes, the higher quality night sights last only 10-12 years, but that's as good as it gets.
Trijicon is a company that produces tritium night sights. In my opinion, their night sights are the best there is. "Bright & Tough" is their motto and after using their sights on most of my handguns over the years, I'm here to say their motto holds true.
At Trijicon, you have the option of different color rear night sights - orange and yellow - apart from the traditional green. Trijicon advises to choose green however, because that color is brighter and lasts longer (10 years) than orange and yellow (5 years).
You said, cws_dallas, that the lifespan of the tritium gas was a concern. The upside to Trijicon night sights is that they are so well constructed, with white rings around the lamps containing the tritium gas, that after the glow is gone you still have a perfectly good sight with a descent 3-dot sight picture. That's a win/win scenario if you ask me.
Good luck and stay safe!
