    Who uses a password program?

I never have, but with all I do online I'm thinking maybe I should. What are the best programs out there? How do they work? Can you log onto web sites from different computers if you are using one?

I have one through Norton but I don't use it as if they crack that code its all over with. They have total access to your PC. I could be wrong buy I don't like a one shot opens everything.

I have not used a 'password program', but for an added layer of security, I use Fire Fox on thumb drives. I have a password on the thumb drive, then let Fire Fox remember the passwords to the sites. Even on my home PC, I use the thumb drives, and I keep the drives in my briefcase, so even from work or anywhere else, I have all my favorites and passwords. I use one drive for 'My Biz', that has my banks, investments, insurance, travel sites, etc., and that keeps all the info off the PC. I use another for fun stuff like T/A.net, Bud's, CTD and other sites. Even in the event of a hack, virus, etc. all my info stays safe.

LastPass has a free and a paid Pro version.

    https://lastpass.com/

It is portable, heavily encrypted, and works on all browsers on almost all operating systems, including smartphones. It uses encrypted cloud computing so it works on different computers, and is always synched.

Read the reviews of LastPass and its FREE competitors:
    https://www.techsupportalert.com/bes...rd-manager.htm

TechSupportAlert (above) top rated LastPass (10 starrated) and says:

"LastPass is a one of a kind product. Most password managers are either online or software only. It is the combination of both web service and software. With the web service you can access your data anywhere. The software which runs on your computer allows you to view your data even when you're not connected to the Internet. When you install the software, the plugins for IE and Firefox are automatically installed. There is now a plugin for Google Chrome as well. The plugin allows you to automatically fill forms. You will be logged in without even a click. You can always disable it if you don’t like it. One thing I really like about LastPass is the Password Generator. The Bookmarklet is a lifesaver if you’re on Chrome, Opera or just about any browser that supports JavaScript. The Bookmarklet does not have all the features of the plugin though, but it does allow you to fill passwords and forms, which is all you actually need. Did I mention you can store unlimited passwords? I personally have over 100 passwords stored on LastPass.
If you’re worried about security or reliability, then let me tell you LastPass is as safe as it can possibly get. It uses the same encryption algorithm that the US Government uses for top secret data. The key to decrypt the data is only known to you, so the database is meaningless to hackers. All encryption/decryption occurs on your computer, not on the servers. This means that it does not travel over the Internet and it never touches the servers. The entire site is encrypted and verified by Comodo."

I've used Password Tracker Deluxe since 1998. Paid $10 for it then - now $20 and worth every penny IMHO. Link below.

So - if I'm reading these correctly, the program(s) store your passwords in an online account, & that is how you can access them from remote computers - is that right? I'm wondering how I would access sites like my bank from work, where I cannot load any software onto my corporate laptop. I don't do that often, but there have been instances & I want to be sure I'm not locked out if I don't have my laptop with me.

Although, it looks like Password Tracker stores the passwords on a single computer - is that right?

That would be correct on PWT (I have it on home computer and laptop). Won't work from thumb drive unless the machine you are using has the program installed due to it's encryption of PW data. I'm too paranoid to use ANY on line storage account of any nature, much less pass words. I just went thru a phone phishing exercise yesterday with BoAC Visa card - It turns out I was okay, but their recent security breach according to the customer service I spoke was causing some major havoc and reissuing cards to those affected (1000's) if they wanted to keep the account.

I have been using one for 5+ years now. It is un a USB drive that is also password protected. Plug it in to the USB and it requires a password, then the program starts, "Sign-up Shield" and also asks for a password. After that everytime you open up a web page it will check to see if you have a stored password. Also has a quick start where you can click on your stored websites and go right to them. I use it every day, comes in real handy for those websites that you don't visit very often.

LastPass stores passwords heavily encrypted 'in the cloud" which requires a strong password to access. LastPass works on any browser, most smart phones, and other devices.

Is there a backup on your computer to the thumb drive? What concerns me: I had a thumb drive go bad on me & lost the data which was not replaceable. If that would have been my stored passwords.....
