Sherman wasn't the peaceful little city I thought it was!
This was one the Texas Rangers lost - 81 years ago this month:

I went to a funeral in Sherman two weeks ago, and parts of it look about 100 years old. It's not a very booming town, and it's easy to see how something like that happened 80 years ago.

One thing about the link I gave. It mentioned the prisoner was placed in a fireproof vault. Fair enough. Only problem was the vault wasn'[t smoke-proof or heat proof.
The story I got from the oldtimers was when they took the guy out after the courthouse burned down, he was already dead and cooked pretty good.
But they hung and burned him any way. The locals also told me the rape accusation that led to his arrest in the first place turned out to be a lie.
Ooops!

Yes, I noticed that. Kinda reminds me of the movie Unforgiven, when a story starts getting out of control.
He likely asphyxiated in the vault. The air would have been pulled out to feed the fire, then he would have cooked.
