Why does ice water taste better?

It's not just that the sensation is more pleasurable, the taste is better... at least for mr.

    Any guesses as to why?

I have no idea since I prefer water at room temperature. Cold water like my wife drinks it makes my head hurt. Oh wait you are in Texas and I lived there 10 years so I understand.

colder water is not effervescing chlorine as quickly as warmer water, as well as any other chemicals that may be present.

After working in a factory for years I got used to drinking room temp bottled water and often choose that over a cold drink. However I am drinking a cold orange soda because I just ate some cold pizza.

Re: Why does ice water taste better?

I think it may have something to do with our tastebuds and the nerves in our mouth. Cold water shocks your tastebuds and nerve endings. I believe this sends a different message to your brain than drinking lukewarm liquid.

Drinking something cold sends the "primary" signal "COLD" to your brain. This overrides your ability to discern some of the differing tastes from the mineral content of the water.

When we drink liquid that is closer to our own body temperature, these nerve endings are not over-ruled through the "shock". Therefore; we tend to taste more of the mineral and/or chemical make-up of the liquid.

    At least thats my .02c.

The do in Great Britain olfarhors, at least they served room temperature when I was there in the 80's. Now I do like my beer cold and soda's when I drink one which is rare. Water on the other hand I drink little of unless in the form of coffee or tea.

YEP! room temperature beer is common in Europe i understand!
Personally i think this is more than likely why we kicked their butts in the first war we had with them, well they didn't like what we did with the tea either!
but i think it was the hot beer that really stirred the Americans up!
