Our Pigs are off the market...

In January we bought 3 baby pigs as a 4-H project... They were tiny little things and we could fit all three in our large pet carrier.

As the months went by, they grew up and each developed personalities that made us laugh...

Now our little pigs weigh around 300 pounds each and are hanging out at the County Fair with our kids waiting for auction day...

If you and your family are looking for a project I recommend looking into 4-H... Doesn't have to be pigs, it could me chickens, rabbits or any other animals

Too right! I remember my grandad used to buy one every Summer and fatten it up. When it came sausage making time in the Fall, that was a sad time for a little kid.

Been there and done that (3 times). All three of my kid were in 4-H and FFA. Great organizations. My wife and I had fun too by volunteering going on the field trips and competitions.

Yeah, it was an interesting time.
One thing I noticed is that our pigs are MUCH bigger than the other pigs at the fair... I can't explain it, unless the others did not feed their pigs enough.
Our pigs weigh about 300-ish pounds each and some of the other pigs are less than 200 pounds (I don't think they will be allowed to auction their pigs)

Anyway our kids are learning how America puts food on the table...

    We spent:
    3 pigs - $125 each
    Hog grower feed - $900
    Total: $1025

Last year the average auction hog here went for $6 a pound
    2 Hogs @300 pounds =600
    $6 x 600 pounds = $3,600

    Profit $2,500
Plus we will have the 3rd pig butchered and have a deep-freeze full of meat

Unfortunatly 4-H and FFA numbers are starting to dwindle, the new generations don't even realize they exist...
I am glad we are having a chance to expierence what they have to offer.

It is sad that the kid now days only think about video games , facebook, twitter and hanging out at the mall. A days work on a real farm would kill most of them.

Re: Our Pigs are off the market...

Two guys were talking and the subject turned to livestock.

"I have a pig you wouldn't believe," one guy says.

"H'e so smart, we trained him to bring in the paper and the mail.

My kids walk to school every day and that pig keeps them company."

"When he gets home, he drags the laundry basket around and helps my wife washing clothes."

When the door bell rings, the pig answers it," the guy said. "He greets the visitors and escorts them to wherever we are. Except he has learned to spot bill collectors and salesmen and he just lets them wait."

"He plays catch with the kids with a Frisbee. He can jump into the air to catch it and then throw it back."

"He guards the house. Some guys tried to break in the other night and that pig made such a racket he scared them off," he proud pig owner boasted.

His neighbor seemed duly impressed and asked, "What do you call this amazing piggy."

    "We call him Tripod."

Perplexed, the neighbor asked, "Why do you call him Tripod?"

"I would think it would be obvious," the swine owner said. "A pig that good, you don't just eat all at one time."
