In Conway, SC; right up the road from where I live, there is a very old Oak Tree residing next to the court house. It use to be the "hanging tree" many, many years ago when criminals were hung publicly.
It's a shame this still isn't done. A grim reminder of what is to come if you commit a capital crime. I have the up most respect for forien countries that continue to use capital punishment freely and openly. Those same countries exist with out crime and the occupants live with out fear.
Got an area over run with gangs and crime? Behead a few of them in the streets and leave them to rot for all to see. inhumane? Maybe...............Effective? 110%

I like the way they do it in China. If you are convicted of a capital offense you get one appeal in one year. If you loose the appeal they take you out and in front of the rest of the prisoners they shoot them in the head.
As for this guy I feel that justice will be served.
Not only did he terrorize a nation and devastate families he gave those damn liberal gun banning left wingers more ammo in their rhetoric.

With the exception of Finland and Iceland, all the top ten countries, with the Lowest murder rates, are in Africa or bordering it. You mentioned Saudi Arabia, they are on the list too.Originally Posted by wyohman

Not all of those countries have capital punishment, and those that do, not all of them "publicly admit" to allowing public execution. I don't suspect the ones that do it publicly ever would admit it, regardless of what the truth is. But, I know how it works.
The bulk of countries you mentioned simply use public execution, which bares no relevence on the fact I was talking about countries that not only use capital punishment, but have below normal crime rates. I acknowledge your point however, and it is valid. It could go either way, and the bulk of the countries that do public executions are a mess, and flooded with crime and corrupt leadership.
What I was trying to get at was I think it is effective to show people what they have to look foward to if they commit a major offense; like murder. For most, it probably doesn't hit them until they are on the way to the chamber. Doesn't matter anyhow, it will never happen.
Highest murder rates:
1. Honduras
2. South Africa
3. Swaziland
4. Colombia
5. Lesotho
6. Rwanda
7. Jamaica
8. El. Salvador
9. Venezuela
10. Bolivia

Here are my fundamental issues with capital punishment:Originally Posted by tarpon4me
1. I'm not willing to give the government the power to execute its citizens. The government already has enough power and its agents often abuse it.
2. It doesn't deter anything and there's a fundamental reason why. People commit crimes because they believe they won't get caught and not because of the punishment. They've done study after study and the results seem to be consistent. Criminals really only fear home owners with guns.
I'm a pragmatist and like to ensure my money is spent wisely. I hold no allegiance to a political party or any dogma for that matter. I'm also keenly aware that people sometimes abuse their position. What better way to solve the crime problem then to allow citizens the fundamental right of self-protection. Personally, this would have been MY first amendment to the Constitution.
Cheers.
