    The Internets...

So, I looked up a few items on Amazon today at work. Just got on my computer at home and went to a financial site that a frequent from both home and work. However, I was not logged into this site, nor was I logged into Amazon (log in boxes for both were blank), but everything I was looking at on Amazon today at work was plastered all over the banner adds on the financial site on my computer at home.

Raise your hand if you think there is ANY privacy on the internet.

Did you login a some point in the past? These are targeted adds and you do not need to be logged in for it to follow you around.

Yep. What really irritates me is when they keep advertising something that I've already bought!

Don't need to log in. Cookies are the common theme. You look at something on site A on computer A and the same site on computer B, the same cookie exists on both. These cookies are examined by every site that you access. That's how they work. To prevent it you use Google Chrome and the icnogito function (<CTRL-SHIFT-N). No cookies or history will be stored for any site you visit. Otherwise, Al Gore's Internet will know your little secrets.

Exactly! If you use firefox, they have a private choice that does the same thing. Also, you should delete cookies from your browsers every so often. I learned that the hard way. Wife hopped on amazon to look for something and all she saw was gun accessories! Next thing I know, she said "Hey I thought you said you didn't need anything else?"!

There is no privacy on the internet. Don't believe it? Google yourself and be prepared.

Using Firefox these are the entries (checkable) when you select from the file menu

    History/Clear Recent History:

    Browsing & download history
    Form & search history
    Cookies
    Cache
    Active logins
    Offline website data
    Site preferences
    Tab Mix Plus saved sessions

You can clear all of these (or selectively) when you close your browser.

    Tools/Options/Privacy/History --
    Accept cookies from sites
    - Accept third-party cookies: Never (Select)

    Block popups:
    Tools/Options/Content -- Pop-up √ block pop-up windows

√ Clear history when Firefox closes

    This is my recommendation.

The internet is a public usage network, you cannot think that anything is private. That is why you must be careful of you say and go on the internet.

I have 3 programs always running that block ads, popups, known malicious sites, urls that redirect you and so on.
Cookies are deleted upon leaving a site. I have history turned off.
I have a big ugly guy staring at my monitor.
    I never see ads. Ever.
Not in here........not even way over there----------------------------->

I quit television because of ads.
If it comes to where I can't avoid ads on the internet I will quit that too.
This is just a fun way to pass the time and chat a bit.
I will probably not die if I drop it.
