Hi, I have an old model 65 in 38 special.. Its in nice shape.. But I have a question about the serial number.. Inside the cylinder opening are the 1st two digits of the serial number, but on the cylinder arm there are 4 digits that don't match the last 4 of the serial number.. Does this mean the cylinder/arm was replaced or is that normal? Thanks, KT

You have me confused by the 38 special caliber.  All the mod 65's that my company owned were 357 mag.  We also had about a dozen mod 64's in 38 special.  Same SS, K Frame guns but the 65 was 357 mag and the 64 was 38 special.  If I remember correctly the serial number is stamped on the bottom of the butt.

I had been looking for a .357 all day and had a mental hiccup...

Sorry, I'm thinking about Smith & Wesson revolvers.

It will depend.  Anything manufactured before 1968 may or may not have a serial number.

That only applies to long guns. Serial numbers have been required for handguns for decades, at least. I've never seen a handgun manufactured since at least 1900 that wasn't serialized.

Posting photos would be helpful on this one.

What do pictures have to do with anything. Either the number should match the serial number or not... The gun was made in 1993

I'm not sure how to take that.  I guess the answer is no the 4 numbers inside the crane area do not normally match the last 4 numbers of the serial number but should match the 4 numbers on the frame.

As stated in my original post there are two numbers on the frame under the crane.. this is the model number 82.. On the crane there are four numbers that dont match the serial number or anything else... Since they don't match the serial number then what do they indicate?...

I don't know that one.

I can tell you that on my early 2008 issue 85UL that the crane number does not match the serial number. However, the 4 digit crane number does match a 4 digit number on the frame under the crane. I don't know when they started doing both numbers.

On the frame under the crane I have:
9583
85

On the crane I have:
9583

Could be minor changes made in the production of the firearm.  S&W used to add a - and a number to indicate as much after a model number I believe.
