Don't feel bad - I did the same thing a couple weeks ago. The extractor pin is knurled on one end, and repeated insertion and extraction wears the knurling off, and the next thing you know it comes out. Mine popped up enough to let the extractor go, and then fell back down into it's hole. Anyway, the upshot is you need to replace the pin if it's been in and out of the pistol to the point where it isn't tight anymore.
I hope you found the extractor. I replaced mine several weeks ago, and the unit I received from Taurus was pretty raw. They have to be fitted in order to work properly. It's not difficult, but it needs to be done correctly. But all things being equal, it would be better if you found the original.
