If the bullet doesn't match, he didn't shoot her, so there won't be any reason for the media to hyperventilate over gun ownership and they'll dash on to the next twinkly story that catches their eyes.

As part of their duty to protect the masses, the media will not report it, to avoid conveying the idea that using a gun in self-defense might be a good thing.

For everyone that says the gun owner was wrong in initiating the fight (even with sketchy information) there will be someone pointing out that attempting to escape would be a natural thing, as would turning to defend yourself when you realize you've been cornered.

And I seriously doubt that waiting until the bad guy fires the first shot so you can establish your right to self-defense is a wise move.

I would like to know more about this, though.

I just spent some time poking around trying to find any updates on the net. I learned that a) there are a LOT of robberies at Family Dollar stores...maybe it's the name? and b) All of the stories I found for the one in Houston date from 5 and 6 days ago.

Hmmmmm......do I detect the rancid smell of media indifference? Sounds as though the bullet came from one of the robbers guns, and, that, of course means that all is as it should be to the media.

Could also be that bullet identification is not as quick or as concrete as what we see on C.S.I.

The incident occurred on 5/19/2012. Yesterday was 5/26/2012. Forensic matching of bullets, especially with the gun in question available for matching, is old technology. It has been computer enhanced as of the 1990s. There is zero reason why it hasn't been matched yet, unless competency is not job #1 at the lab. Homicides get first attention, especially those that can move quickly, with little serious work. Clearing a case quickly attracts additional funding.

I concur. I found long ago that the things the media doesn't say are usually more telling. But, alas, inquiring minds want to know (the facts).

Houston's crime lab has such a notoriously bad record that they've pretty much are in the process of shutting it down and will contract it out to a private lab.

Well that certainly opens the door for Lawyers to drive a truck through when defending their clients..."ladies and gentlemen of the Jury, the Houston PD has publicly admitted that their lab is inferior! "

No, it only goes one way and we are on the same page. While those rape kits are languishing on shelves awaiting processing the rapist is free to attack more women. We spend too much money in many ineffective ways and don't spend it where it needs to be invested.

I was merely pointing out that defense attorneys will make a big deal about poorly run and equipped crime labs and sway a juries opinion in that fashion.
