The old three screw Blackhawks and SuperBlackhawk didn't have a transfer bar. They were fashioned after the old Colt revolvers. They had four positions for the hammer. Hammer on the firing pin, quarter-cock (supposed to be a "safety"), half-cock (for loading) and full-cock. Most people carried the revolver with an empty chamber under the hammer because of the reason for this post. Even with the revolver at quarter-cock, it could fire if dropped on the hammer with enough force. A guy I knew in the Air Force had a .357 Blackhawk that was an old three screw and filed the trigger down. He did this so he could just release the hammer after he drew it from the holster. He thought this was a good idea until he almost shot himself in the leg when the hammer slipped from his thumb as he was drawing it out of the holster.

I never post on these stories like this one, as it just isn't understandable to me to not have a handgun properly secured in the holster and the owner not being cognizant when nature calls. Other than my BB gun when I was a kid, I never dropped a gun. No French in my blood!

I have had that happen. I was at the range for annual qualifications. We were at the 7 yard line and when I drew my G21 out of the holster it slipped out of my hand. That was the hardest thing I have ever done to fight the instinct of reaching and trying to grab it. You naturally want to try and grab it, but that's the worst thing that you can do.
