Retired Veteran Shot Multiple Times At Wagoner County Shooting Range

WAGONER, Oklahoma - The Wagoner County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting of 73-year-old retired veteran at a gun range near Wagoner. It happened around 7:30 Thursday morning.

The victim, Kenneth Payne, was shot multiple times and taken to a Tulsa hospital. Sheriff Bob Colbert said he is expected to survive his injuries.

The Wagoner County Sheriff says it appears Payne was leaving Toppers Gun range and walking back to his truck when someone shot him multiple times in the head.

Payne was seriously wounded but managed to grab his cell phone and call his family for help. His family called 911 and alerted authorities.

Authorities say four guns were taken as well as a portable tool chest. Colbert said no money was taken during the robbery.

"We got a 73-year-old veteran that was shot, left for dead. He'd served his country and basically, somebody tried to snuff this guy out. It's terrible," Sheriff Colbert said.

Sheriff Colbert says Payne is an avid gun enthusiast and practices at the range every day. Payne retired from the Air Force and lived only a few miles away.

The Sheriff is asking the public for any information regarding vehicles or anything that might have been seen during the timeline. OSBI is also investigating the incident.

I used to go to an outdoor range by myself nestled way up in the Black Hills. I realized with time that it was a good way to get jumped and robbed. The bad guys in the 1986 FBI shootout stole their weapons and ammo from outdoor range users in Florida, who they then shot and left for dead. The first victim that day was an innocent gun owner who had his weapons and car stolen to be later used against the FBI that afternoon.

If one does go outside to shoot, keep a loaded weapon openly carried and ready to use with your vehicle locked and pointed toward the exit for a quick getaway.

SOBs and pond scum can be found anywhere.
When at the range, I always have my EDC loaded and either in my pocket or IWB, no matter what else I may be shooting that day.

That is totally discomforting. The criminals knew this man was more than likely armed and still carried through with their criminal activity. They are the worst of criminal element at the most dangerous level.

The problem is that this is how the two killers, who shot the F.B.I. agents back in 1986, started out. These vicious violent twosome would find and kill lone people who were out in the boonies plinking.

I feel sorry for the 73 year old man and his family. I pray he get well and makes it. Not to mention that the culprit/s are caught and punished.

This is just utterly disgusting. Every time I think I can have faith in humanity, there's some idiot or two that pulls the entire species down the ladder a few more rungs. People like that are the lowest form of scum on earth, and deserve every bit of punishment and justice that comes their way times ten. I always keep my 945 on me for trips back and forth to the car, and when something seems a little shady at my normal range, I have no problem with packing up and leaving ASAP. I can clean my guns at home, Even though I like to get the crud out of them before packing up to go home..

Hopefully the gentleman can make a full and speedy recovery, he'll be in my prayers as well as his family.
