Well if he's lucky PETA won't sue him on behalf of the bear's family, citing excessive use of force and/or premeditated murder as he carried a legal firearm into a place where he knew he could not discharge it!

Now Mr. and Mrs. Backpacker you can carry that sidearm inside the park, but it is against the law to discharge it. What are you supposed to do throw it? Stupid law, anybody knows backpackers in bear country are known to the bears as "lunch". The other thing to remember is if your going to shoot a bear make sure you kill it, dead bears can tell no lies. If you don't "well Mr. Ranger I was just passing by and this human for no apparent reason just started firing at me".

It might be the first bear shooting in the park, but I remember a few years back, a woman was killed by a bear hiking in that park. It's okay to get ate, just don't kill a bear.

The two reported the shooting to rangers, who restricted access to the Igloo Canyon area for fear that the bear was wounded and dangerous.

Well, now, they reported it. There's a saying, ya know, SSS....Shoot, shovel, and shut up. I wouldn't have bothered with the shoveling part of that.

Well as they say better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. In the case of a bear inviting you to be lunch perhaps carried by one in a garbage bag.
