    Flip Up Scope Covers

I bought a nice Nikon scope for my new 30.06. I am pretty excited as its my first hunting rifle, no more borrowing. No its not a Taurus haha but I like this forum, its members seem to be very helpful! I was thinking about getting some of those buttle creek flip up scope covers. Are there any pros or cons to them?

From what I hear they work fine. As with any product you have the high end and low end and sometimes it does not matter. I would not spend a fortune on flip ups. A tight fit on your scope is what matters and good clearance with your gun. Congrats on your new gun I'm an 30.06 fan myself and have the one I bought when I was 18 and she still purrs like a kitten dead on accurate. With plenty of rounds to chose from.

Most shoot 150 grn well but I like 165 grn boat tails. They just shoot flatter.

    Rem 700 ??

They are only about $7 or $8 per cover at the local shop, seems pretty reasonable.

I am wondering though now, what better between the spring loaded, vs the standard ones.. I am not really liking the spring loaded ones just because of the colored push buttons. (stupid excuse I know but I am picky haha)

I have had 'em on my .308 Remington M7/Weaver 2x10x40 KV for a dozen years or so. The push button thing on the rear cover broke. I just flip it open with my thumb like with the front one. They do seal tight, great in wet weather.

I take 'em off at the range. They'll work their way off under recoil of multiple shots if ya don't or you could tape 'em to keep 'em in place, but they're easy to slide off. I ordered mine from midway with the scope and they fit tight. No problems in the field, though. They are fast into action when you need 'em open and seal off the water from the lenses when you don't.

If it comes off under recoil, you probably either need the next size down or, if that's too small, I have used a thin layer of electrical tape around the inside of the offending cover to take up slack. (EDIT: This allows me to remove it easily if I need to rather than having to re-tape them.) On the other hand, if it is just a little bit too small, I would suggest soaking the cover in a bowl of hot tap water for a minute or so. The heat expands it slightly while the water provides a little temporary lubrication while you slide it on. I've used this method several times and it seems to work very well.

As for the original question, I have some kind of flip-up (mostly from Butler Creek if they have something available) on most all of my optics. You don't have to worry about losing them and they do a good job of keeping the world from getting to your lenses right up until you need them.
