    Re: Approach to slide racking

Both ways depending on the gun or situation. :P

Initial rack from the rear and sling shot. I have ease one into the chamber to see if it could be done on my 24/7 .40, went in like a hot knife through butter and quite as a mouse too. I've never had a FTF, FTE, etc but in practicing I clear over the top.

    Re: Approach to slide racking

I am an over the top fan, but mostly due to the surgery I had last year making it easier to rack by using both hands. I push with gun hand, and pull with the off hand over the top of the slide.

I guess it would work almost the same if I grabbed the rear of the slide and held it pushing the gun forward with strong hand, but my grip with off hand, that way is mostly fingers, and the strength is not there it seems. Just MHO!

I voted from over the top also but do it both ways now that I think about it I guess it depends on what type of shooting I'm doing I really don't know though maybe I just switched after I lost strength in my arms from my illness .

    Re: Approach to slide racking

When shooting I rack the slide from the back with barrel pointing down range in a safe zone. For some reason when I am checking or clearing a firearm, at a store or at the house, I hold it close to my chest and point it in a safe direction (usually down and to my left so as not to be pointed at my feet or anyone else) and rack it from over the top. I feel like I can control the firearm better and keep it pointed in a safe direction by having both hands over the gun in case I am bumped or something...and yes my finger is away from the trigger and out of the guard. I guess I am kinda weird doing both.
If it is to be...It is up to me!

Over the top. This also makes clearing a stovepipe very easy. Sweep, grab, rack. Plus you are less likely to ride the slide back. This is also how I release my slide after a magazine change. This way I'm not trying to hit that tiny slide release button if I'm in a high stress situation.

    Re: Approach to slide racking

Having lost some skin a few times with hand over slide racking a 92 & 99 in the past and always wanting the muzzel pointed away from any part of my body I only rack from the rear.
