Hi folks! How many of ya'll are itchin' to get together for another fabulous meet at the Blair County Game, Fish, and Forestry Association in Altoona, PA? Seems like all the fun that was had down in Texas at TH&PH's place this past weekend, not to mention the recent arrival of warmer weather around here, has motivated many of us to start planning/dreaming of some great outdoors shooting adventures! In October of 2014 a bunch of us good TA.net folks met at this nifty range facility and had a really good time. This year, we want to make it at least a two day event over a Saturday and Sunday, and maybe even get together on Friday evening.
We've checked in with the folks at the Blair County facility and it looks like we have two possible weekends: July 23/24 and August 6/7. On the weekend of July 24th, the Blair County shooting facility is scheduled to have a center fire hand gun steel plate shoot from 8 am - 3 pm and trap shooting from 1 - 4 pm! We can participate in both events! The steel plate shoot is a timed event, 40 shots, but they do not draw from a holster and they have their own rules - nothing special - it's more for fun. While it costs only $10 per day to shoot at the facility, the trap area works independently and for 25 "birds" it costs 3.50. Trap shooting is also scheduled on August 7th from 1 - 4 pm.
There is a 25, 50, 75 yd pistol/rifle range; a 100, 200, 300 yd rifle range; archery shooting; and a range for black powder shooting.
Hmm, i can probably come down there for one day. I have to stretch out the annual leave since I've already allotted my two weeks of vacation this year. Either set of dates are good with me, just have to figure out what to bring this year.
DH has a couple of nifty oldie rifles he'll probably bring. I want to take our black powder handguns! They are so much fun! I'm still on the lookout for a Carcano carbine!
OK folks - WHERE are all the Pennsylvania people??? Maybe they are out mowing the lawn on this beautiful day (or likely at work, like the rest of us), but I might have to send out Sherlock Holmes-Minion to find them. Gotta' keep this thread going until the "Pensatuckains" show up!
Saturday's the first day of trout season so some are prob'ly out settin' up their tree stands. I'm not goin' out, there isn't gonna' be snow so if I got one, it'd be a hard drag.
I like the idea of hittin' the events on the 23rd & 24th of July, wondering how crowded the place might be. Sorta' depends on what kind of turnout we get, I suppose. I'm good for either date so whichever y'all pick......I'm gonna' be there to annoy ya'.

Ok folks -we are on for the weekend of July 23 & 24! Should be lots of fun....and definitely warmer than last time. Fish can wear his shorts and feel right at home!
Sweet! A buddy of mine committed to coming along. He wanted to come last year but his work schedule wouldn't allow. He's currently setting up to go into business for himself so he should be able to schedule a weekend off. Of course......we self-employed types know how that usually turns out. Then again, I'm helping him get started and this is one case where I would not necessarily hesitate to play the "yowme card".
Well sorry to report that I most likely will not be able to make the PA meet this year, I am glad that you guys are planning a repeat and hope you have a great time. That is a really nice facility to shoot at. Knock some steel plates down for me please.
 Sorry to hear that, sure was hopin' you could be there again. Maybe in your honor, we can have some kind of award......like a "Gunpowder an' Guts" award for whoever shows up with the biggest cannon?!
Hi folks - just thought I'd drop by the thread and say that we got "formal" written permission and a formal welcome to use the Blair Country facility on July 23rd & 24th - next step for me is to check on the local hotels and report back. Right now July seems a long time away - but before you know it, it'll be here! So be sure to put in for vacation time, line someone else to mow the lawn that weekend, start re-loading or buying ammo (we still need to get more .223!!) and report back here!
I will be coming to it again this year and i will be talking to some friends to see if they want to come along since it is only 2 hours from us. By that time my wife should have yet own gun and hopefully can come for the fun. I will bring hot peppers for sharing also.
I don't know if my wife will make it or not. She can't take any vacation 'coz she's goin' to Russia for a couple weeks in August and has to work that weekend. Still, she often gets calls for sites in Clearfield and Osceola Mills, both pretty handy to Altoona so she may have a few minutes to drop by if she's out that way. I've got a couple more friends to invite too but it's kinda' hard to entice people to go with me, since I figure on bein' there for 3 or 4 days and it's even harder to get 'em to come later, on their own. I plan to get there fairly early on Friday and may not leave until Monday morning, depending on what everyone else does.
Mouseman- we are CLOSING THE SHOP for that whole weekend and our store is normally closed on Mondays so we can stay thru sometime on Monday! Depending upon how exasperated I get with work, we might leave for Altoona early on Friday! Heck, we're even closing the shop to go to the Rapid City meet in September! Now that we're old geezers we've realized that we better make a little time for fun, before time runs out....
Have you ever been to the Horsehoe Curve in Altoona? It's cool -20 yrs ago I took a train to Pittsburgh around the curve -it was sooo neat to be able to see the other end of the train directly across the mountain!
Our range buddies will go on their own, I believe. Last time I tried to follow their car and our little chariot just couldn't handle the hills and we lagged quite a ways behind and I got stressed out trying to keep up; DH was snoozing in the passenger seat at the time! We hadn't gone out to that part of PA for a while and I had forgotten that those "hills" are really old, old mountains!
No matter how long or short folks can stay, let's all try to at least stop by for a visit! Ya' gotta' admit, TA'ers are a great group of folks - and this is a great way for the spouses behind the posters to get in on all the fun, too. I mean DH has just stopped asking what's so funny when he hears me chuckling to myself. He knows that ya'll just gotta' know the folks...
Yeah, PA roads usually go like this / or like this \ and there just ain't a whole lotta' this __ in between. Lived here most of my life but have never been to the Horseshoe...:dunno:...ya' never see the stuff in your own backyard. I'd definitely like to see it, sorta' planned to hit it last time but didn't. Gotta' admit, Fish sure seemed to be rather interested in it......maybe a li'l too interested in it. I kinda' expected him to show up next time with something like this.............
 Pretty sure that woulda' got us kicked offa' the steel target range.
Sheis currently looking at the Taurus curve and the sccy cpx 2. She wants to shoot the curve before she decides on one. So we are going to an indoor range that had one to rent to try it out.
There's is also a bed and breakfast in that area that is right on the tracks that caters to the train fanatics. They keep track of the different schedules of all trains that come through.
She is not sure yet, the feel of the gun is very important to her. She had handled a number of guns so far and the curve, the sccy! And the Sig p238 are the main contenders. She could look at that one to, i will have her look into it. Thank you for the heads up. Yes she will be looking into carrying the pistol she eventually buys.
The bed and breakfast is in Cresson it is the station inn. All rooms are train themed. It is a bit pricy to stay there but if your a train fan it is pretty close to heaven.
Thanksfor the heads up on the pistol. I did some research on it and it is a little bigger but reviews say it is easier to shoot. So she would like to see it at the shoot if your bringing it.
I realize a lot can change by then but out of curiosity, I looked at the long range forecast for July in Altoona and they're predicting temps will average in the high 70s to mid 80s, with 40-60% humidity. Really, kinda' on the cool and low side for late July in PA. As I recall, all of the ranges have overheads at the firing line and the long rifle range was like shooting in a tunnel so even if it's clear and sunny, it oughta' be just about right at the lines. Bein' on the floor of that narrow creek valley, it'll be a li'l cooler anyway and there's usually at least a light breeze blowin' through there. Always a good chance for pop-up late afternoon/evening rains through there in July and August so raingear might be advisable to have handy but I think we can leave the parkas and mukluks at home this time.
Actually, I'm prob'ly gonna' really miss wearin' the heavy coat. That padding came in real handy at the long range. I'm definitely gonna' have to get a shoulder pad for this one.
