Hi folks! How many of ya'll are itchin' to get together for another fabulous meet at the Blair County Game, Fish, and Forestry Association in Altoona, PA? Seems like all the fun that was had down in Texas at TH&PH's place this past weekend, not to mention the recent arrival of warmer weather around here, has motivated many of us to start planning/dreaming of some great outdoors shooting adventures! In October of 2014 a bunch of us good TA.net folks met at this nifty range facility and had a really good time. This year, we want to make it at least a two day event over a Saturday and Sunday, and maybe even get together on Friday evening.
We've checked in with the folks at the Blair County facility and it looks like we have two possible weekends: July 23/24 and August 6/7. On the weekend of July 24th, the Blair County shooting facility is scheduled to have a center fire hand gun steel plate shoot from 8 am - 3 pm and trap shooting from 1 - 4 pm! We can participate in both events! The steel plate shoot is a timed event, 40 shots, but they do not draw from a holster and they have their own rules - nothing special - it's more for fun. While it costs only $10 per day to shoot at the facility, the trap area works independently and for 25 "birds" it costs 3.50. Trap shooting is also scheduled on August 7th from 1 - 4 pm.
There is a 25, 50, 75 yd pistol/rifle range; a 100, 200, 300 yd rifle range; archery shooting; and a range for black powder shooting.
Hi folks! I just got off of the phone with the Altoona Super 8 and they have rooms for the weekend of July 22-24. The rate is $75+ tax per night, but with AAA or AARP they can give us a 10% discount. A group of us stayed there last time and it was pretty good. Here is their info:
Super 8 Altoona353
5 Fairway Dr US Rt 220/I-99 exit 32
Altoona, PA 16602-4479.
814-942-5350
The Days Inn and Comfort Inn Altoona were also recommended to us, but their rates are higher. There are a few other places that have lower rates, but several recent reviews of these real economical lodgings are not very favorable.
DH and I and Mouseman (and our respective contingents!) plan on being there Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday evening and shooting all day Saturday and Sunday. WOOT!!
The shooting will be at: Blair County Game Fish & Forestry Riggles Gap, Altoona, Pa 814-942-8522
Testing one, two...check one, cheeeeeeck....wuuuun, tuuuuuuu, check, check...testing wuuuuuun-tu, cheeeeck......
...izzis thing on? Can y'all hear me back there? Cheeeeeck, wuuuun, tuuuu......
C'mon folks, it's less than two months away and we've barely got enough people committed (to the meet, not an asylum) to pack a Yugo. With all the new members in this neck of the woods, I figured we'd need some butter, a shoehorn and a good push to get everybody into the range.
I can't make any guarantees right now personally, I also have a family reunion on the 23rd and it's hard for me to get off on Sunday's. Might have to do an abbreviated trip out with just a few guns to play with.
Oh, Montkun - I know that's a distance for you to travel - but it sure would be GREAT to see you again! While having the opportunity to shoot is very important, of course, having the chance to catch up with TA.net friends is THE most important! I will gladly share our firearms and ammo with you, just so that you can sneak away from your family reunion to come to your TA.net family reunion!!
Just made our room reservations for DH & I and our contingent of minions - and they raised the rate to $80+ tax - the gal insisted that yesterdays dude gave me the wrong info! Regardless - Altoona - here we come - just cross out the Orlando part and pencil in Altoona!!!!
I have been talking to a lot of my shooting friends about this and hope we can bring a good sized group from north central PA. I also ordered my wife's gun for her so she will be coming to get into the fun and games.
Counsel- that is wonderful that the hot pepper contingent will be there!
Which .380 did you end up ordering for Mrs. Counsel? It will definitely be fun for us female folks to shoot our .380's together and we'll even let you manly big bore types shoot our pistols, too! By that time I will have a new to me CZ 83 that I can also bring along. Dang, looks like DH better make me more ammo 'cause that may be my handgun caliber of choice that weekend.....no, wait...44 black powder, 45colt; of course for long guns .223,...22 lr,wmr..and hornet! Uhh.....we might need a bigger car .....
Well she went with the Sccy CPX-1, (in purple) with the safety, she shot it and liked it, and it is a 9mm as are my pistols so we save money with all being one caliber.
I am working on bringing as many of my shooting friends as well. we will see if we can get a good sized group to come out and welcome everyone for the shoot.
Saturday and Sunday, I assume a group picnic lunch at the range and hopefully Friday evening, for those that can make it, we'll all go out to dinner somewhere. Also, we'll prob'ly be meeting for breakfast on Saturday, Sunday and even Monday, for those still remaining....which I'm hopin' is a bunch.
Not sure about Sat & Sun suppers, prob'ly be at the range too.
Hi Raystown - besides you, it looks like we got the counsel contingent (2, I think, Mr & Mrs and her new SCCY )), the Maryland minion contingent (5 or 6) and the mouseman/kschilk contingent ( 1 or more?) then there is our good buddy Montkun who is going to try to stop by sometime on his worldwind tour of family and work obligations. If I have left anyone out, please, please for give me - but chime up here on this thread and let us know!
Yeah - meals are TBD. I do believe if we all brought coolers, that we can get sandwich fixins and drinks for lunch from a local grocery for lunch on Sat and Sunday. Friday nite dinner we should have at that nifty restaurant we ate at the last time - anybody remember the name of that place? It was right close to the motel. I loved that restaurant/pub...it was like I had gone to Heaven - I got a huge salad with FRENCH FIRES on it! YUMMMM! Apparently, it's a Pennsylvania thing, and dang, is it good!

Yeah, that place was nice. I can't remember the name, I'd prob'ly recognize it if I saw it so I'll try to look it up when I get a chance. On the upside, the fact that I remember it had a name at all is well above my usual recollection capabilities......so I guess I'm not a total burnout.
Hey - how about those of us staying Sunday night think about hitting the Railroaders Memorial Museum and Horseshoe Curve in Altoona on Monday! Admission to the museum and Horseshoe Curve is only $11 and they open at 9 am! The link to their web site with lots of nifty pix is:
DH and I are "railheads" from waaay back and I know that while I actually got to ride around the Horsehoe Curve on Amtrak about 20 years ago (which was pretty keen in and of itself) I would enjoy visiting the museum!

The railroad museum looks cool. I did visit Horseshoe Curve at the first meet, the video presentation and small display they have does not take long at all. I spent about an hour watching the trains pass by, and enjoying the beauty of the surrounding area reflecting on my earlier part of the day. I don't think I brought it up before but that morning we spread my dads ashes on the property he grew up on near Kelly Station, PA. Horseshoe Curve was just what I needed to clear my thoughts that day.
The fries on a salad are definitely a Pennsylvania thing, mostly western PA in general because we'll gladly put fries on just about anything. More often than not, you can easily find a steak or chicken salad covered in fries or a sandwich topped with fries and some version of coleslaw.
For the longest time, I wouldn't even try it 'coz it just never sounded good to me but I gotta' admit, it really is killer. If you order a grilled chicken or steak salad here, you have to specify "no fries" if you don't want 'em but really, once you've tried it......there's no goin' back.
AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWW CRAP!!!!!!!!! Bad news for me. I found out that my wife and i have to be in Ohio for these two days of the shoot (plus a couple of more) We won't be able to be there to have the fun with everyone coming. i will still pad on the shot info to my friends but don't know how many if any will be coming if they don't know anyone there.
Geez man......haven't you heard?! Ohio's not gonna' be there that weekend. Yeah......turns out, Kasich broke it and it's gotta' go back to the dealer for repair. They're supposed to have it pulled and crated-up by the end of next week but with shipping and all......turnaround's gonna' be several weeks. They're sayin' it might not get reinstalled and hooked-up 'til the middle of August or later.
Aww counsel - I was looking forward to seeing you, but I understand - life gets in the way sometimes! I will salute you and the Mrs C with a french fry off of my salad Friday night in your honor! And once you get Ohio put all back together, take some pix so we know that you got the job done right!
Well we will give it or best effort, but we are only there for 4-5 days. But we will do our part. The nice thing is now that Ohio recognizes or CCL. My wife wants to find quilt shops, and i will look for gun shops for our free time. Plus we will be in Canton so there is the pro football hall of fame to revisit.
Hey folks- guess what I found that's only 5 minutes down the road from the Blair County Fish and Forestry Association where we are going to shoot - a local gun shop!
The name of the place is Riggles Gap Gun Shop, 1007 Riggles Gap Rd, Altoona, PA 16601, 814-946-9044 . Here is their web site: http://www.rigglesgapgunshop.com/index.html
Looks like an interesting place and it might be fun to stop by there!
I have mentioned that very quilt shop to my wife and as are most quilters net eyes light up and she gets a far away look in her eyes. We will have to look into that this summer since i am semi retired and can travel much more.
