Hearing Protection

My wife had a tumor removed from behind her ear and can't wear earplugs or a earmuffs. She wants to get a gun and go to the range but her ear is painful. Do you guys think a motorcycle helmet would work?

Based on my experience with wearing a motorcycle helmet ( from a long, long time ago) ............ NO!

The helmet will mash her ear against her hear while putting it on, will push against it some ( this is how it is designed) and will fold her ear backwards while removing the helmet.

Add to that , that the helmet will add weight to her head and her neck will work harder thus feel sore after wearing it a while because you are not used to wearing one.

Plus is will be hot and sweaty.

The foam is designed to be very snug against your head - ears included - as this is what keeps it from sliding around, spining or bobbing up or down while wearing it.

Sorry to hear about your wife's tumor. Can she not wear hearing protection permanently or is it just temporary? Hopefully temporary as I can not think of anything she can use as hearing protection that would not cause pressure on the ear.

Might want to consider some BOSE over the ear noise canceling headphones. The hollow cavity fits around the ear (making no contact with the ear cartilage) and when you turn them on, they do a good job of canceling ambient noise. I've used them a time or two to nap on planes. Not sure what their measured decibel reduction is but may be worth looking into it.

Have you asked her doctor about some sort of custom fit plugs or at least cotton stuffed in the ear (not the best but it would provide some protection)? Just spit balling here.

Hopefully it is not permanent that she can't where hearing protection.

Motorcycle helmets are NOT designed to be hearing protection. Any noise reduction is a by-product of the safety/structural design. If this is going to be a permanent issue, a suppressor is the best answer.

Ditto on helmet, those things dont really block out the sound that well, it isnt the design, if anything they are built to allow sound through as you need to hear while riding, and they press your ears into your head pretty hard when you take them off and put them on.

what she might consider are some of the plugs that you make custom fit, I have not used them so this is speculation on my part, but i would think that as you are making them custom for her ear, that they will have the best chance at being something that will create the least pressure, while still being able to block out some sound.

IF you can't wear good hearing protection then one should remain away from anyone firing a gun!.
as for the thought of a suppressor??
well I guess you could get everyone that MAY shoot where you shoot to add a threaded barrel to their gun and buy a suppressor, you know after applying for the fed papers and such!
really a suppressor?
kind expensive and not a real workable solution in my opinion.
Hope the wife is mending well.

Hopefully its just a temporary situation!

As suggested, I have seen noise canceling headsets that fit in a big ring around the ear, maybe those would work.

IF it looked like a possible permanent situation then I would make an appointment with an ear specialist (I am not even trying to figure out what the real name of that doctor would be!) -- Hear -ologist maybe?
and see if they couldn't offer some expert advice.
Bet they could!
