Re: Federal Premium Low Recoil Personal Defense load

Hmmm..."low recoil" personal defense ammo is an interesting advertising gimmick. It's what used to be called a target load.

I saw some chrono results for .357 mag "low recoil" defense ammo some time ago, it was barely more powerful than 9mm.

Considering the expense, I think I'll pass.

Reduced recoil almost always means reduced velocity. It's kind of hard to repeal the laws of physics, isn't it.

Interesting results from link posted in another thread. Looking at "real world weapons" and the difference between Federal 125 JHP and Federal 130 gr JHP low recoil.

Since there is no measurement of felt recoil in that testing, there is no way to determine that the "low recoil" loads are actually that. The same bullet weight and velocity in the same barrel length will virtually always result in the same felt recoil, especially in short barrels. It's simply physics.

One has to be careful not equate manufacturer's advertising copy with reality. Quite often they don't come close to matching.

A lot of guns don't feed certain ammo and some don't lock into battery when someone rides the slide forward. Bad habit to get into.
+1, I grip the slide just hard enough that my hand comes off the back when the slide hits the end of it's stroke. You need the full force of the recoil spring for reliable feeding.

The best way is to do it just like a tactical reload ...

    Slide locked to the rear,
    Insert full magazine,
    Release slide lock.

Has anyone ever seen a tactical reload done on a closed slide?
