No restrictions in Iowa. You really don't have to do the shoot portion (depends on who qualifies you). I chose a 1911 because of the 4.25" barrel as opposed to the 3.33" PT145 barrel.
In Texas if you qualify with a revolver all you can carry concealed is a revolver, but if you use a semi-auto you can carry either. At the range if your semi auto is a single action/double action your first shot is required to be double action. However, if your choice of firearm is single action you tend to have a slight advantage by not dealing with the DA trigger pull.
And since I will be renewing my CHL this year, I have been giving thougt as to which firearm I will choose to qualify with. The last couple of times were with a Glock 19 so the first pull of the trigger was the same as every other after that. But, alas I have sold the Glock and most of my other semi autos are of a SA/DA breed. So I am thinking of picking one of my 1911 .45 and practice, practice, practice to perfection
So all of this got me ta thinking, what did others choose in the way of their qualifying weapon?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, I wonder what my restictions to carry would be if I used my Ranch hand 38/357mag to qualify with. After all it is a pistol by federal law.

If you have a difficult job to do....Give it to a lazy man......He will find the easy way to do it.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

"A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." -Thomas Jefferson
Oklahoma is the same way thats why I used a semi auto to qualify with
Well, that would be an M-14, M-16, M1911 and M-79 a long time ago....(FL accepts DD-214 record from former military)

"Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?... Has it ever occurred to your, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?... The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking-not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."
XD40 for the first one I had to shoot for in Nebraska, and for my Utah nonresident. I had an Iowa one before that but was not required to fire one shot for it.

Here in Ohio it dosen't matter what type of handgun and all you need to do is prove competency with a firearm. I used a Taurus 605.
Old age isn't for pansies!!
Due to the rising cost of ammo. A warning shot will NOT be fired!!

wisconsin only required a 4 hour class and that you can load and unload a gun.
I used a full size 1911 but as has already been said here, in Ohio it doesn't make any difference.
The government can give you nothing it first does not take from you or someone else.
jonrjen, am I understanding this correct? In Texas, each time you renew your license, you have to re-qualify?
If that's the case, you choice would be simple. Qualify with a semi-auto; so you will not be restricted with what
you can carry.
I am in Tulsa, & as another shooter from Oklahoma mentioned, if you qualify in Oklahoma with a wheelgun, then that's
the only type you can legally carry. And you are correct in one thing you mentioned. A revolver is technically a pistol.
At least, that's what I believe. A semi-auto & a wheelgun are handguns, ergo to wit, pistols! Anyway, I qualified with a
semi-auto. The only difference between your state & mine, is that you do not have to re-qualify at renewal time, in Oklahoma!![]()
