I used an XD9 sc that I wish I never sold. What's the reasoning behind differentiating between a revolver and a semi-auto for qualification? I smell politics.

I used a Ruger P85. It didn't matter if I shot the first round in SA or DA. We had to show proficiency with the firearm that we selected. My only other choice at the time was my 738 TCP. I too am a bit surprised that there is a distinction between revolver and semi-auto. Strange. I'm also a bit surprised by the number of states that don't require applicants to fire one shot. I guess that just comes down to each state's prerogative.
Q: Why do you carry a gun?
A: It’s much lighter than carrying a police officer

I got my first permit when I lived in Maine, many years ago. There was no qualification requirement, however, the Sheriff's Dept. I worked at
required that any Deputies (without a permit) carrying off duty must qualify with their carry weapon.

When I went for my Florida permit back a few months, the requirement was that one had to show familiarity/comfort with a handgun.
For the class I took, this meant going into a long closet with the instructor and firing a blank out of a .38 revolver. Attachment 36354

I first qualified with a Colt Commander, and the next three renewals. I carry a revolver. Also for Texas, I just received my notice that my license expires in six months, but due to recent law changes, I won't have to attend any classes or qualify on a range. AFTER your second renewal (third) licenses are good for ten years. All I had to do was fill out a simple form and send them 35$.

Yes in Texas you do requalify at the range everytime you renew your license. It used to be that you had to qualify with a 9mm or larger if using a semi auto, but now I believe you can use a .380. Interesting thing about the range test is that there is no score reported to the state, it is either "pass" or "Fail".

My last time to qualify I would have had a perfect score, except the shooter next to me was shooting a 1911 and when we were doing a 5 shot series one of his .45 case ejected and landed between my shooting glasses and my eyebrow. Dog gone that hurt and blistered fast.

It is kind of amazing at the number of states that don't require a range gualification test of some sort. I guess this is why there are so many states dropping other states from reciprocity in allowing CC.

This time around will be my second renewal, I look forward to the class/range pass after that.

Before I started buying Tauri, I had a Astra 600/1943 in 9mm and a Colt Agent 38 Special. I used the WWII vintage Astra 600. It was a nice gun but had a heavy trigger. I later traded it for a Taurus PT940 and have since bought several 9mm Tauri.

That was not required of me at my last recertification with my Taurus 99. When did that change?

I have read something like that in the IDPA rules, but think those were written by the 1911 crowd and am mildly annoyed by that as a rule. Same with the rule about only 10 rounds in a mag.

I used my Taurus M851. No restriction in Florida between revolver and semi auto.

'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.' Thomas Jefferson

In New Mexico you are required to qualify with the style of firearm you plan on carrying. If you use a revolver then you can only carry a revolver in the caliber or smaller that you qualified with. The same goes for semi autos. Therefore I qualified with a 357 revolver and a 45 ACP semi-auto. This leaves almost all options open for me.
