I open carry at home, when hunting and when the situation permits/requires it. I travel a lot for work so I CC more than OC because a lot of states are CC only. That being said, it's everyone's Constitutional right to carry however they see fit (unless Obama, Hillary and the UN have their way with this new law which is going to cause utter chaos in this country if they succede). If you're comfortable with open carry, carry that way. If you choose OC I believe you should pay extra attention to your surroundings at all times to prevent anyone getting close enough to disarm you (just my opinion - which coupled with $2-$3 will buy you a beer in most bars). If keeping your weapon concealed suits you better, by all means carry that way. The point is that you are exercising your right to carry whichever way it may be.

Generally I open carry when I walk my dog, especially when I do not feel like changing out of my work clothes.

Tonight, I saw a fellow open-carrying at WalMart. The fellow looked to be either unhappy or attempting to look intimidating. I don't know which, but, I do know that everyone knew he was carrying.
On the other hand, nobody knew if I had a weapon. That's why I do not open-carry.

I OC for comfort, I am already wearing a size 40 waist jeans, I don't want to have to buy a new wardrobe to CC. I do CC when riding as I have a CC leather vest so it makes sense, plus the wife does not like the firearm digging into her thigh while riding. My wife OC's because, well at 4'8" she is appears to be a "soft target", however the OC'd taurus PD suddenly makes her appear LESS a target and more a danger to potential BG's.
Which would a typical mugger assault, a 4'8" cute lady, or a 4'8" cute lady, with a large handgun? Oh, the thought that she MAY be armed will deter SOME, but the knowledge that she IS armed will deter more. I have seen it in action. Thuggish individual comes upon her and when he sees the firearm, he turns around and exits the area quickly. Your typical mugger, rapist, thug is looking for an easy score-tiny woman = easy score; tiny woman with a big gun = danger. They want the easy target, with the least danger to themselves.
Surprise is excellent in offense, but not so much in defense. Surprise does not deter, it escalates. One of my favorite analogies is:
What if you are approached while CCing by 3 toughs (ratty jeans, tee shirts (and for me leather vest)), do you allow them to approach on the sidewalk? draw your weapon? Go the other way? If the first, well if they intend harm and have a knife you have just let them get within striking diistance and are likely to lose not only your wallet but your sidearm, if the second; what if they are heading to a church meeting/work site/dining establishment-you have just "brandished" your firearm and will likely lose your CC permit for threatening unarmed individuals, if the last-what is different between you and an unarmed individual?
I cc when I must, OC when I can and NC if I absolutely have to.
OC in my state is not "illegal" but CC without a permit is. And a holster conceals as does a car.... it's a tricky definition. If i walk down the street with it in my hand I am "legal" in the sense that I am "carrying while afoot" but if I get into a car with it it is concealed. Then i am illegal. If i hide it behind my back because i'm walking up on a crowd then i am concealing it therefore illegal. However, openly displaying a firearm can be construed as "brandishing". So i am not confident that oc is really "legal" here. It's safer for me to just have the permit than worry about whether I'm legal at any given moment. As for my opinion of oc vs cc i am biased toward cc. People are reactive, panicky, unpredictable creatures by nature (the bystander) and the person committing a crime is likely to be even more so. So given the choice between making myself a potential target of a misuderstanding, or worse, a preemptive strike and keeping quiet advantage concealment offers, I would choose the latter, even if I could with confidence legally wear one on on my hip.

I do open carry sometimes, mostly on the farm. When I do I use a retention holster.
I respect NYPD not detailing what he has seen but I would like to see any case were someone was targeted first because they were open carrying, I have searched a little and have found nothing.
In the end I pretty much agree with this guy,

OC is legal in New Mexico, I OC on my land and in/around my home. I usually CC when out and about simply because I do not want people to know I am carrying, I would rather have the jump on a situation instead of it having the jump on me. Also, there are too many people who panic when they see a gun, not worth the LE encounter at that point in time when they call and cause an encounter.

More often than not I conceal carry. That being said, I was off work for a few days the week of July 4th and I did OC quite a bit. I OC`d in some of the local businesses like Walmart and Home Depot and a few others. OC is getting pretty well accepted here in Michigan. It actually never been illegal here, it`s just a lot of people didn`t know about it.
