    Houston Denny's attempted robbery

Gunmen flee after shootout with customer at Denny’s

Police are looking for two men who fired at customers eating at Denny’s early Saturday.

The incident happened in the 11900 block of East Freeway at Federal Road, shortly before 6 a.m.

In an attempted robbery, two men entered the restaurant, demanded money and held out their guns, according to reports by KTRK and KHOU.

An armed diner pulled out his gun, and a shootout between them followed, but no one was injured.

    From KHOU:

The suspects returned fire before fleeing the scene in a white minivan. The customer ran outside and fired at the suspects’ van, but they got away.

Police said a white minivan with what appeared to be bullet holes was later recovered in the 1400 block of Griffin.

I do not know all of the details but I with what I do know, I am pretty sure I would not have taken things into my own hands. I carry for personal/family protection only. I have a problem with these CHL carriers with a vigilanty attitude. How screwed up would his life be if one of the bullets he fired hit an innocent by-stander somewhere? Be smart about things and make sure if you do pull your weapon, your feel that YOU were fearful for your life.

Yeap, you need to look at the big picture before pulling that firearm and letting that little bullet fly. Of course with out being present, we don't know all the information or threat level that was perceived.
Big problem I could see for the Good Guy here is the firing at the van as it left the scene....there was no longer a immediate present threat....the bad guys were leaving.

I can't say what the CCW holder felt or sensed when the robbers displayed their firearms, but starting a firefight in a restaurant is extreme... IMO. Even more seriously compounded when he pursued them out to the street and continued firing. Even LE would not have done that.

The customer played cowboy and brought about the ensuing shoot-out and could have caused death or injury to others. This isn't a situation like the Luby's massacre when the gun man came in guns ablazing!

    I agree.

But it would a tough call to figure out their intentions. Hopefully no shots are fired and they only want the money from the register.

I would have mine gripped and ready in case their aim comes my way.

    I forgot to add this...

My wife and I were watching the news last night and and they reported that the guy that pulled his gun was the only patron in the resturaunt. The police found the van the robbers were driving and it did have bullet holes throughout.

He may have been the only patron, but there were employees there also. Perhaps the bad guys turned towards the patron like they were going to rob him also....I'll be curious to hear how this all shakes out.

Some people...just want to be the "hero". They lose sight of the big picture.

I don't like commenting on these matters, as the press nearly always misses a vital part of the story. So I preface this with the truth that I wasn't there, so I can't monday morning quarter back this based on the article.

That said, IF the press article is accurate as written then the CCW holder should not have drawn down.
I once read about an off duty cop who was in line at his local bank when a guy walked in with a .357 revolver demanding money. The guy commanded that everyone lay down on the floor, and while the deputy was on the floor he wondered if it would be a good time to draw down on the crook while the felon's back was turned. Before he could finish the thought the robber was running towards the door. Before leaving the bank the crook yells 'JEFF, LETS GO'.

That's when the guy in line behind the cop stands up and runs out the door with his own magnum revolver drawn.Had the deputy made a move he'd be on the ground with a bullet in his skull, and its a lesson the cop took time to impart regarding the potential consequences of 'being a hero'.

If im in an Ihop and it gets hit by a felon the Taurus will stay holstered. Its sad that the place is being robbed, true, but my life isn't in danger from the insured cash drawer being emptied.Once the bad guy decides to threaten my life in exchange for my money the situation has shifted from a threat to a stranger to a personal danger, and I will react in kind should that take place.

If the crook takes the store's money and bails, the gun stays holstered and my heroic act will be a description of the crook and his getaway vehicle to the authorities.
Here's a thought: what if Adam Lanzas mom had a CCW?
