    Holsters That Aren't Holsters

The thread about using knife sheaths, etc. for carrying spare mags got me to thinkin' (dangerous I know), but does anyone carry in anything unconventional to conceal a handgun? We've all seen fanny packs and backpacks, briefcases and day planners, but has anyone used something really different as opposed to a holster?

A belt eyeglass or some cellphone cases will carry an extra mag. I modified a watch pocket in a pair of Wranglers to carry a full size 9mm, works real good.

Eyeglass and cellphone holders are good too, but I guess I wasn't very clear. I meant something unconventional for the carry of a firearm, concealed.

I have this hollowed out Bible I carry when doing missionary work, does that count? :P Tuco in "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" used a lanyard. I like Mexican carry for a semi-auto, or do like Wild Bill and use a waist sash to store your brace of pistols. Then theres always the old pistol in the fake video camera trick. Hang on a minute, I have to take off my shoe and take a phone call!!!!! In my younger years working a 2nd job at night, to make Christmas money in San Pedro, Ca, I worked at a gas station at night by my self, and stuck a .45 Colt Single action into my hip pocket and covered the Butt with a red rag. Two nights of working there was all I needed to convince myself that it wasn't a good idea to continue that job (this was in 1970 and it was still a full service where I had to go out and pump the gas). I had a carload of unsavory looking men come in to get gas about 3 in the morning, and purposely pulled the rag to the side to show the walnut grips on the Colt.

Wow, never thought of improvising something instead of a holster but it makes sense, why not. Sometimes in the early AM when I'm walking the dog I just slip a handgun in my coat sleeve and it seems to stay between my shoulder and the jacket. When I'm driving I keep a black t-shirt in the truck and put whatever I'm carrying between the bucket seats and hide the firearm with the shirt.

What I need is an ankle holster that I can wear with shorts in the summer that doesn't look too conspicuous! Maybe I can cover it with a bulky sock and say it's a large tick if anyone asks.

A while back I used a sheath from a pair of needle nose fishing pliers to secure my Beretta Bobcat in a hide out position. I ran three screws through the nylon webbing to secure it to a piece of wood. The velcro strap held the Beretta in place.

Here is something similar, but mine was wider and much cheaper. It came with a really cheap pair of pliers. :P

A camera bag could be useful to carry a pistol or a revolver if you were going to picnic in a park in a rough area of town or out at Buffalo Lakes on the Sinko-de-mayo! Smokewagon should appreciate why I say that.

My change pocket makes a good holster for my Keltec p3at and a t-shirt covering it, or a piece of velcro inside a boot top is handy for the keltec also.

    Re: Holsters That Aren't Holsters

I live in North East Florida now but when I lived in South Florida I would often put my carry gun inside a loose fitting zip lock bag and then put it into my pocket. I used to sweat so much during the summer (New construction sites) that I would get literally sopping wet. The zip lock bag kept the gun from being soaked everyday. It was loose enough that I could hold the gun and fire it right through the bag without a problem if I needed to.

Velcro in the boot, that Jake3501 mentions, made me remember a patrol sergeant that had a local boot maker years ago, attach one side of a jacket snap inside the top of his boot. He then apoxied the male side of the snap to the side of a small pistol. He could then just snap the pistol in place inside the top of his boot.
