Hello,
I have been lurking here for a while, and have decided that I need some help. I am in the market for a 24/7 in either a PLS or an OSS. I am unsure of which caliber to get. I will be carrying this gun some, keeping it handy at home for home protection, general target shooting and plinking, and I would like to go to a competition shoot every once in a while. The 9mm is attractive to me for its low cost and I am already reloading 9mm for another gun (my wife’s). I like the 45 for the mass of the bullet. I'm on the fence about the 40 because of some of the things I have read. I am looking for a good conversation about the pros and cons of these three caliber choices. Thanks
Personally I'd say between the 9 and .45. Since you are already re-loading 9mm that would be a good choice. But reloading for .45 is a bigger savings than for 9mm. The .45 will be the better defense round normally and would be my personal choice. I love the .45's If you listen closely you can hear the Tool Man Taylor grunting when you say .45.. :shooter: :guns:
.45 is the undisputed king. If you reload, then it's a good choice. Otherwise, it's expensive as hell to shoot. 40 is a lot cheaper to shoot than 45 and is a better self defense round than the 9. 9mm is kinda weak IMHO.
From my handle you can guess where I'm going yea the 45. Nothing wrong with the 40 its just another round to have and I have several 9mm and 45's Plus 38/357. keeping a 40 is just adding to what I don't need. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
Don't be afraid to jump right in we are a friendly bunch
A very contested debate. Welcome aboard. There are alot and I mean alot of debates on this fine site as well as throughout the internet. Shoot what you are comfortable with and can shoot accurately. I carry a 9mm. A personel choice and a professional requirement. I have though done more then my share of research and test firing to what works well for me. I use the heavier 147 grain +p. It is still as accurate as the 124 grain +p but gives alittle more thud . Closer to the .40 IMO
9mm, .40 S&W, or .45 ACP...they will all do the deed for self defense. All one needs to do is put the round(s) in the right place. (I have a 24/7 Pro Compact in .45 ACP)
As for the 24/7 PRO Compact DS, they are hard to beat! Mine is 120% dependable, very accurate, and concealable with the right clothing.
If this will be your only gun to use for self defense and general shooting, the I would get the 9mm. I think the 9mm is plenty powerful enough for a defensive round. My 24/7 Pro DS 9mm holds 17 rounds. If I were to shoot an intruder with 17 9mm hollow points, I am pretty sure they will come to a quick stop. The 9mm rounds also cost much less than .45 rounds for just target practice shooting. I would love to have a .45, but I want my 9mm pistols too
for most of my target practice shooting.
If you want to minimize the types of ammo you're buying/reloading, go with the 9mm.
If you could care less about general cost really and want something you know will put them down, go with the .45. You can buy relatively cheap ammo at walmart and online, usually at half the price of buying what your local dealer normally stocks.
If you want to go between the two and have relative cost efficiency while still providing a bit of shock and awe in your pistols punch, go with the .40. They usually have nearly as many rounds as a 9mm but pack a little extra bite that is closer to the knockdown power of the .45.
Anyway about it, what round you use won't matter if you hit the right spot.
well if most interested in carry, then go with a 24/7 Pro D/S or a 24/7 C Pro D/S.
IF interested in range work and accuracy then go with the 24/7 OSS D/S.
if most interested in a home protection gun, it really don't matter!
Now for caliber if interested in plinking and target shooting the 9MM.
if interested in self defense mainly then the 40 cal or 45 ACP.
also make note that the 9MM with a modern loading will be more than adequate of self defense, I shoot a 92 grain all copper hollow point out of a 3 inch 9MM that produces 1325 FPS and 360 ft Pounds of energy, thats real close to 45 acp stats!
The 40 cal will produce better stats than the 45 in standard pressure ammo.
IF I reloaded for any caliber already then that would be a big indicator in which weapon caliber to go with for me!
If i did not own or reload a existant caliber i would more than likely go with the 40 cal.
and I say all this being a 45 ACP lover.
The OSS is simply a notch above the other 24/7's.
capacity in all the calibers in the 24/7's ar more than adequate for defense purposes.
Go with the .45.
I feel that any arguments about the cost of shooting one caliber or another are really all statements in favor of reloading.
Cost of reloading 100 rd of 9mm: $15.20
Cost of reloading 100 rd of .45 acp: $19.36
Obviously that depends on components - I assumed no cost for brass - recycled, probably should add $1 for approximate cost.
9mm used 124 gr Rainier plated bullets, .45 used 200 gr. Rainier plated
Both based on max load of AA#5 powder and CCI primers.
I like to carry .45. Defense ammo does cost significantly more, but I only shoot about 100 rounds a year/gun to ensure function and check POA. Practice ammo is practice ammo. I adjust the load so that it feels like and hits same point.
Just to avoid some confusion I guess I should have also stated that my main carry is a J frame 38 special. I am aware that it's the shot placement not just the size of the bullet that really counts. I just wanted to show that I would be using this new gun for a little bit of everything. After reading some more on my own and your comments as well, I am leaning toward the .40. Another set of reloading dies is not expensive, and I like the thought of blending both rounds more and more.
I just picked up the .40 today in the 24/7 G2. Haven't shot it yet, but will throw some lead down range tomorrow. Had the 24/7 in 9mm when they first came out, was a great gun for me, just wanted to go up a bit this time.
I own both, actually. I own and operate both a standard 9mm 24/7 Pro and a .45 24/7 OSS. Bought the 9mm 24/7 Pro first to see if I actually liked the design, fell in love with it, and had to have one in .45 ACP.
Of course if you can only buy one, I would pick the 9mm.
I would lean more towards the .45. It is a very powerful round and do a lot more damage to the perp. I have the 24/7 c ss .45 and it shoots awesome. love the weapon.
I have shot the 24/7 C in 9mm, 40 cal, and 45 acp, i have shot the 24/7 pro in 9 MM and 40 cal.
The 40 cal has a bit more recoil to me but nothing that i have shot in the 24/7 series is punishing or even near it in ths gun.
Its really quite surprising how little felt recoil there is with them.
the 9 MM is simply a gem as to recoil and ability to get back on target due to th light recoil.
if its the wifes gun i would see if i could find a 40 in something for her to try before making the purchase however.
i have 45's and a solo 40, hopeing to add another 40 today, i have been loading up on 45 rounds, but have noticed 40 is 2-3 doallars cheaper and lots of differing loads probley due to le useage (i just picked up a box of 40 winny rangers 12.95 for 20 yesterday) i feel better shooting cheaper and still feeling good about stopping capibilties
correction to above, 50 rangers for 12.95,sorry old eyes on small print
